The soundproofing in this house wasn’t very good. Before long, I heard a certain indescribable noise coming from the direction of the bedroom where Yu Jin and I had been.
At first, I wasn’t entirely sure, but the sound grew louder and louder until it could no longer be ignored. I couldn’t focus on reading anymore.
Just thinking about it was terrifying. Was this still a mother? To provoke her rival and take something that didn’t belong to her, she was willing to risk the child in her own womb.
“Hehe…” I couldn’t help but mock myself silently.
More than ten minutes passed, and the sound had not stopped; it was getting even more rampant. Distracted and annoyed, I hadn’t turned a single page in the book I was holding.
I truly didn’t love Yu Jin anymore, but this was my room. There were only three people here, and my husband was in our bedroom with his mistress…
It was ironic, to say the least. I stood up, put on my shoes, and packed the book I hadn’t finished reading into my bag.
Then I walked toward the door. I didn’t want to stay here any longer, because I wasn’t alone now. For the sake of the child in my womb, I didn’t want someone like her to ruin my mood.
Even for the sake of my child, I had to try to make myself happy.
Besides, if I really got angry, wouldn’t that just be playing right into her hands?
I left the complex and went to the bus stop, watching people rush by, coming and going. I also looked at the tall buildings before me.
The sun was blazing, but I didn’t feel hot at all. On the contrary, the breeze hitting my body felt a little chilly, and I instinctively tugged at my clothes.
Yes! How pitiful I was. In such a huge city, I didn’t even have a place to call my own.
The house I had before was no longer a home—it had become the home of her stepmother and brother. It was a place she could sell for a small bride price without hesitation.
And now, my husband was dissatisfied with me and constantly made things difficult. As for my in-laws, there was no need to even mention them. Now, he had even let the mistress move in with her bags.
The only home I could possibly call mine was probably that small rented apartment of just a few dozen square meters.
It was the same familiar bus I had taken before. I remembered how I often took this bus when Yu Jin and I were dating, but now…
I had come to a familiar place again.
I entered and closed the door. I felt utterly powerless and collapsed, half-kneeling and half-sitting, leaning against the door on the floor.
I felt completely drained, as if my body had been hollowed out. So weak. So exhausted, it felt like I could fall asleep just by touching a pillow.
As I sat there, tears began to fall without me noticing. One after another, like beads breaking off a string, they wouldn’t stop. The tears stuck to my bare face, making me look extremely disheveled.
My first instinct was to reach out and wipe them away, then pull myself up with the door handle and the shoe cabinet.
I turned on the kitchen light, the living room light, and finally the bedroom light. Usually, I only turned on the lights where I needed them to save electricity.
But now, I felt that only by turning on all the lights could I feel safe, as if I wouldn’t feel so helpless living in darkness.
I went to the bedroom, walked straight into the walk-in closet, grabbed one of my nightgowns, and headed to the bathroom.
In the bathroom, I looked at myself in the mirror—messy and disheveled—but I smiled faintly. Then I turned on the heater and, after a while, placed a towel over my face.
