Chapter 3
âI knew our guild master was crazy, but I never imagined he would marry into the Grand Dukeâs family.â
âHenry, thatâs the third time already.â
âIâm upset, thatâs why!â
Bang.
Henry slammed a stack of papers onto the desk in front of Edward.
âAll newspaper companies in the empire have contacted us.â
âThe news spreads fast.â
âHow could it not?!â
Henry held up the top newspaper and showed the headline.
âThe richest man in the empire becomes the son-in-law of the Kailum Grand Ducal House⌠They couldâve made the title more elegant.â
âEd!â
âThe Grand Dukeâs house announced it themselves. That means the Grand Duke knows now. As expected of the Grand Dukeâs daughter.â
âThey wouldnât let go of someone who walked into their house on his own!â
Edward stood up and looked out the window calmly.
âWerenât you the one who kept telling me to get married? Now that I am, youâre complaining about the bride?â
âI told you to marry, not to become a fool!â
âYou told me to find a woman who knows how to seize an opportunity.â
Edward tapped the newspaper and smiled gently.
âDiana de Kailum seems exactly like that kind of woman.â
âSheâs older than you!â
âI prefer older women.â
It was rare in the empire for a bride to be older than the groomâespecially among nobles.
âAnd I have a flaw.â
âWhat flaw? What are you lacking?â
âThe flaw of being a noble only in nameâsomeone who bought his title.â
ââŚThatâsâ!â
Henry shut his mouth.
Before Edward bought his title, both of them had suffered many humiliations as commoners. Edward bought a noble title from a family with the same surname, âMare,â as soon as he became guild master. Henry refused, saying he didnât need such a thing.
Later, Henry received a knight title from the Emperor for helping famine areas.
Even so, people treated them differently.
A title that was bought⌠and a title that was granted.
The one who bought it was always criticized more.
ââŚWhat people say doesnât matter. People think youâre more noble than real nobles.â
âI think so too. But a family like Kailum might see it as a flaw. So I should be thankful she accepted my proposal.â
âWhat did you even fall for?! What blinded you?!â
Edward only smiled and said nothing.
âHector.â
âY-Yes!â
âI heard Henry has an outside schedule today. Is that right?â
âYes!â
âGuide him.â
Even though Hector disliked Henry, he stood beside him obediently. Sensing the mood, Henry left angrily.
Bang!
âHenry must be really angry. That door sounded quite strong.â
Edward looked at the newspapers Henry left behind.
Since the Grand Dukeâs house announced the marriage, it was already a fact.
âStill, itâs better to play along.â
Edward picked up a pen and began writing.
Usually, he only gave direction and his subordinates handled the rest. But this time, he wanted to give detailed instructions.
Because the imperial family would be watching.
ââŚHeh.â
He couldnât hide his smile.
The hunter had just lost his prey.
The Emperor must be furious.
Not just hurt prideâhis pride had been shattered.
Emperor Morbus.
He always pretended to pity the Grand Dukeâs family while secretly looking down on them.
Edward knew well how humiliating that felt.
As he finished writing, he called Hector.
âHector.â
âYes!â
âGive this to Henry.â
âUnderstood.â
But Hector didnât leave. He hesitated.
âWhat is it?â
âUm⌠the manager is just worried about you.â
Edward smiled.
âYou too?â
âYes⌠What if the imperial family tries somethingâŚ?â
âDonât worry. That wonât happen.â
Hector still looked uneasy.
âHector.â
âYesâŚâ
âRight now, I am a man the whole world is watching.â
ââŚ?â
Edward pointed at the pile of newspapers.
âEveryone knows. Even if the Emperor killed me with magic, it wouldnât be strange. But he canât do that.â
ââŚBecause everyone knows?â
âExactly. If I die openly, people will point to the Emperor.â
âBut⌠heâs still the Emperor.â
âDidnât I tell you before? His power isnât absolute anymore.â
The empire was divided between the Emperorâs side and the Grand Dukeâs side.
âAnd I control the wealth of the empire. Many people live because of me.â
âIf something happens to youâŚâ
âThen the Emperor would be making the worst move.â
The nobles on the Grand Dukeâs side would not stay still.
âAnd Iâm a wealthy man with a good reputation. Many would mourn my death.â
Hector stayed silent.
Edward laughed.
âSo stop worrying and deliver the message.â
ââŚYes.â
After Hector ran out, Edward leaned back.
âStill, if someone really wanted to kill me, I wouldnât stand a chance.â
âYou understand that well.â
âWhaâ!â
Edward almost fell back in shock but grabbed the desk.
It was Diana.
A golden flame flickered on her shoulderâshe had teleported using a spirit.
ââŚYou could at least knock.â
âI donât like announcing my visits.â
Shameless, he thoughtâbut still offered her a seat.
Diana naturally took the seat of honor.
âSo why did you come secretly, Diana?â
âYouâre quite bold.â
Edward simply smiled.
âLetâs have the wedding soon.â
âAlright.â
âHow about one week later?â
Edward hesitated for a moment, then nodded.
âItâs tight, but possible.â
âWhatâs tight?â
âMy parents traveling here.â
For the first time, Diana looked surprised.
âDo your parents know?â
âOf course not.â
ââŚ.â
âThey donât know Iâll become a son-in-law, marry into Kailum, or become your husband.â
Diana looked at him like he was insane.
âTheyâll find out through the newspapers soon.â
Diana sighed deeply.
Edward changed the topic.
âSo the wedding will be at the Grand Dukeâs house?â
âThe High Priest will officiate.â
âUnderstood. The dress?â
âItâs already being made.â
âThatâs unfortunate. I wanted to recommend a designer.â
Diana crossed her arms, still suspicious.
ââŚI came to get a promise.â
Edward nodded.
âWhy me?â
âWhat do you mean?â
âWhy did Edward de Mare choose Diana de Kailum?â
Edward smiled.
âI saw you once when we were young.â
âWhere?â
âAt a charity party in the imperial palace.â
Back then, he wasnât a noble yet.
âIt was boring for children.â
He continued:
âI went outside, got lost⌠and saw you.â
Diana tried to remember.
âI fell in love at first sight.â
ââŚ.â
âI still remember you. Your golden hair like sunlight, your warm golden eyesâŚâ
âWait.â
Dianaâs face turned red.
âArenât you embarrassed?â
âNot at all. I even thought Iâd be fine going blind after seeing you.â
ââŚ.â
âI hope your doubts are gone now.â
âPlease donât doubt a manâs first love.â
His clear blue eyes curved into a gentle smile.
