Chapter 40
Simple offensive magic?
It was an intriguing offer. Even during Dorkan’s incident and then with Zad, as a healer who couldn’t fight, I always wanted to avoid hiding in the back.
I blamed my gullible self for falling for Dabien’s teasing and nodded.
“Well, if you want, I can teach you not only simple offensive magic, but also really powerful attack spells!”
Seeing Dabien grin wickedly, I couldn’t tell if she was the story’s heroic female lead or a cruel dark mage.
“Fireball!”
Dabien cast the spell, and a small, round flame appeared on her palm.
“Wow…!”
Her body moved toward me.
“How about it? It’s not ideal to learn attack magic here. Want to go outside to practice?”
Hmm, maybe I could learn some magic during this short break.
I hugged Rova and followed Dabien out to the open field.
“The magic I’ll teach you is really simple and easy. Even the idiots at the Magic Tower can do it without trouble.”
Magic Tower idiots…?
Hearing her say that, I blamed my gullible self again. Anyone else would think the Tower was a bunch of fools. And I had been foolish to think that if Dabien said it was easy, it really would be.
Whenever I studied with Dabien, nothing she said was truly easy. Everything was extremely difficult. So her “simple offensive magic” was probably already a spell that only Tower mages could barely manage.
“I… I see.”
“Yes, it’s really easy! Since it’s your first time, it might not work well, so I’ll set up a mana amplification circle too!”
Dabien chanted, and a large purple magic circle began spreading across the open field. By the time she finished, its light shimmered brightly, and I could feel the mana around us grow dense.
Bark! Bark!
Rova jumped down from my arms and started rolling happily on the magic circle.
“Hellhounds like places with high mana,” Dabien said, watching Rova wag her tail excitedly and hop around.
“Shall we start?”
“Fireball.”
Dabien lightly cast the spell, and a small fireball appeared above her palm.
“This is Fireball, the basic element magic. Convert mana into fire and aim at your target. The more mana you put in, the bigger the fire. Like this.”
The small flame in Dabien’s hand grew instantly, becoming the size of my head. When she shook her hand, the fire disappeared completely.
“Start by making a small one. Use the same transformation method as you do for healing magic.”
I slowly closed my eyes and imagined a small flame.
Red, flickering fire, small and round. The moment I transformed my mana, a small fireball appeared in front of me with a “pop!” But it went out immediately.
“Oh?”
“Yes! Good! Keep focusing on the mana flow. That size is fine, now try putting in more mana.”
For the first time, Dabien praised me. Feeling encouraged, I closed my eyes again and injected more mana. A small fireball appeared above my hand again.
“Good. Now aim the fireball at a target.”
Dabien rummaged in the pocket dimension and pulled out an old target board. Watching her carry it a distance, I resolved: after learning Fireball, I must ask to learn pocket dimension magic too. It seemed more useful in real life than Fireball, like an all-purpose Laemon’s pocket.
“Now, fire the fireball at the target as if pulling mana toward it.”
Following her instructions, I cast the fireball at the target.
But the small fireball lost power mid-air and vanished before hitting it.
“Hm, maybe the fireball is too small? Imagine a bigger one.”
“Fireball!”
This time, the flame grew slightly, but still disappeared weakly near the target.
“Don’t be timid. Put in more mana! Think of the biggest fire you’ve ever seen and pour all your mana into it.”
A bigger fire… flickering…
I closed my eyes and pictured the largest flame I had seen.
The meteor that had destroyed our house came to mind. A huge fireball burning in the sky. I focused on that and kept injecting mana.
“Don’t worry, put in as much as you can!”
More? I began pouring in mana as she said.
Gugugugugu!
Then, the ground began shaking violently.
Startled, I opened my eyes. The sky, sunny a moment ago, was now full of dark clouds. Rova, who had been happily running around the magic circle, was flattened to the ground, trembling.
“What… what did you do?”
Dabien’s face went pale as she asked me, clearly panicked.
Had I done something wrong? Nervously, I answered:
“You said to imagine the biggest fire I’ve seen… so I just thought of the meteor that blew up our house.”
“Oh my… you cast a non-verbal Meteor? Are you a dragon? This is crazy. First! First! Cancel it!”
“Cancel…? How do you cancel it?”
“Just stop injecting mana!”
Dabien glared at me fiercely, but I couldn’t understand her. Can a spell that wasn’t fully cast be canceled? My voice trembled in panic.
“H-How? How do I cancel mana injection?”
“If you don’t stop it, the meteor will fall and kill both of us!”
I clenched my eyes shut, trying to stop the mana flow, but it was too late. The used mana couldn’t be canceled. Opening my eyes, unsure what to do, Dabien shouted:
“Ughhhh!”
She scratched her head, sighed, and whispered a chant. The mana amplification circle vanished, and a huge white magic circle formed, shimmering.
“Is… it okay?”
But, unexpectedly, a fireball meteor appeared in the sky again.
“Dabien, am I going to die here?”
Tears flowed naturally from my eyes.
“Don’t say such ominous things, you idiot.”
Dabien closed her eyes and began chanting. But the meteor grew closer, its heat and light blinding me.
Then—
“Wow, I wanted to see who dared send a meteor at the Helderios family. This is a good show.”
I turned to see a man standing beside Dabien.
Light purple hair, flawless elf-like skin, clear sky-blue eyes. A tall, beautiful man winked at me.
What? This insanely good-looking man is…
He glanced at Dabien, who was still casting a spell, and smiled. Then, he extended his hand toward the meteor.
“Lady, today you owe me a favor.”
He began chanting unknown spells quietly. On the meteor, white threads began appearing. Each thread was a magic script.
Gugugugugu!
The ground shook as the meteor drew closer.
As the strong wind blew, he slowly folded his hands. The magic scripts turned blue, and the meteor gradually became transparent. When he clenched his fist, the meteor vanished completely.
The earth stopped shaking, clouds cleared, and bright sunlight shone on me.
“L-Lived…”
My legs gave out, and I collapsed.
“Yutias, why are you here? Favor? I could have handled this myself!”
Dabien shouted at him.
Yutias.
The man’s robe bore the Magic Tower’s star symbol.
Dabien, yelling herself hoarse, while he smiled softly. Gentle with my lady, yet a crazy obsessive psycho in truth.
I knew who he was. The story’s male lead, married to Dabien after a contract marriage, eventually genuinely married her: Yutias, Master of the Magic Tower.
Before I transmigrated, I had supported that couple wholeheartedly—even did secret 18+ fanworks. A forever secret.
But reality…
“I told you not to enter the Helderios house without permission.”
“If I hadn’t come, your family would have been destroyed. I left everything recorded in this videometeor. You really owe me.”
He pulled out a small purple gem from his robe.
“Uwaaa! Yutias, you brat!”
Dabien grabbed her head, shouting at him.
“Ha… what do you want?”
After a while, she sighed, glaring coldly at him.
“Hahaha, you admit it, right? I was struggling with the Ropemoa mana tax anyway, but thanks to you, things worked out.”
Was this the lovey-dovey moment I wanted?
