Story 65
Imitation
This happened when I was in elementary school.
There was a sort of local urban legend — we called him “The Pigeon Old Man.”
The Pigeon Old Man used to walk along the national highway near our school, bobbing his head back and forth like a pigeon while muttering, “Poppolo—poppolo—.”
He killed someone when I was in fifth grade.
Apparently, while he was doing his pigeon act one day, a second-grade boy from my school started imitating him.
That made the old man furious.
He chased the boy down, grabbed him, and slammed him against the asphalt road over and over — until he died.
Everyone thought he was completely insane, but the psychiatric evaluation judged him mentally sound.
So, he’s still in prison to this day.
