Chapter 6
âWho delivered this letter?â
Karsein lifted the letter slightly and asked Bert.
âIt was Enoxia.â
âEnoxia? So it was first sent to the Silent Alley tavern?â
âYes. According to her, there was another note included with the letter⊠It said that if this wasnât delivered to Your Grace immediately, she would return to the tavern and cause a proper disturbance this timeâŠâ
Bert spoke with a slightly troubled expression.
Who could have imagined hearing such a thing early in the morning?
âWhat âtoneâ? Thatâs a direct threat.â
So thatâs what it was.
Karsein let out a small laugh once more at Chloeâs boldness.
And seeing thatâ
Bertâs eyes widened in shock.
Bert Valteren was Karseinâs adjutant.
Which meantâ
Whether he wanted to or not, he knew the Grand Duke well.
His habits.
His personality.
Even his usual expressions.
Karsein rarely smiled.
And to be preciseâ
It was almost impossible to see him smile genuinely.
At most, it was a faint, mocking smirk.
But nowâ
For the first timeâ
He laughed out loud.
After reading the letter.
And thenâ
He read it again.
And laughed once more.
This timeâ
It wasnât mockery.
It was closer to a real smile.
âWhy⊠are you laughing?â
Bert couldnât hold back his curiosity and carefully asked.
âChloe EnriteâŠâ
Karsein placed the letter on the desk and tapped it lightly with his long fingers.
Then muttered,
âShe really is an amusing woman.â
âWhat do you meanâŠ?â
Karsein had met Chloe at the gathering last nightâ
But he hadnât said anything about what had happened.
So Bert had assumedâ
That the Grand Duke had simply dealt with her as usual.
But thenâ
At dawnâ
A letter from her suddenly arrived.
And not only thatâ
The Grand Duke laughed.
And even called her amusing.
And thenâ
âShe rejected the gold that rolled right to her⊠so why did she change her mind so quickly?â
âY-Your Grace⊠were you rejected?â
Bertâs blue eyes shook in confusion.
Did His Grace⊠confess to her?
That thought alone was unbelievable.
But Karsein didnât even look at him.
He simply tapped the letter againâ
And gave an order.
âSend a reply.â
âIf she wants an affair, tell her to come to me herselfâwith the resolve to give me what I want.â
Did it arrive safely
Chloe spent the entire morning restless.
She had sent the letter somehowâ
But she felt uneasy.
Tense.
What if it reaches the wrong person?
Even though she had stayed up all night, her mind felt clear.
She didnât eat breakfast.
She only drank several cups of hot tea while sitting in the reception room.
Soonâ
A reply arrived.
Which meantâ
Her letter had reached him.
That was a relief.
But at the same timeâ
âHe wants me to come to him directly? To the Grand Dukeâs residenceâŠ?â
Chloe frowned as she read the reply again and again.
Andâ
âIf I must be ready to give him what he wantsâŠâ
It sounded like a transaction.
If she wasnât willingâ
She shouldnât come at all.
âHe said heâd let me use him if I left quietly⊠and now he changes his words?â
Clenching her teeth, Chloe glared at the letter.
What should I do?
She grabbed her silver hair with both hands.
Even if I go⊠what does he want?
As she kept thinkingâ
Her eyes moved restlessly.
âSister!â
A bright, cheerful voice suddenly rang out.
âI heard you skipped breakfast today. Is something wrong? Letâs have lunch together and talk.â
Roeni entered the reception room as if nothing had happened.
And thenâ
Lucian followed behind her.
âThere you are.â
âYou look exhausted. How much did you drink last night?â
In truthâ
Lucian had already given Chloe a reason.
He said he wanted to spend time with his father and went back to the main house.
Of courseâ
She already knew it was a lie.
Thatâs why she had gone to the gathering herself.
âSisterâŠ?â
Roeni looked at her with innocent eyes.
As if she knew nothing.
And Lucianâ
âChloe⊠are you okay? You donât like the smell of alcohol, right? Iâm sorry. My father kept pouring drinks all night⊠I couldnât refuse.â
With tired eyes and a guilty expressionâ
He spoke softly.
Chloeâs vision blurred for a moment.
She had grown up well with her stepmother.
She had always been close to her younger sister.
And when she turned twenty-oneâ
âRoeni⊠I think Iâve fallen in love.â
She had told Roeni first.
âReally? What kind of person is he?â
Roeni had been happier than anyone.
Even proudly sayingâ
That it was thanks to her debut ball that Chloe met him.
Yes⊠thatâs how it was.
But nowâ
The image of them kissing passionately burned in her mind.
Her eyes turned red.
What should I do now?
She couldnât show her collapse here.
This humiliationâ
This betrayalâ
Was not something that could be resolved so easily.
How⊠how do I drag them down to ruin?
Even if she grabbed her sisterâs hairâ
Even if she struck her fiancĂ©â
Nothing would change.
The fact remainedâ
They had betrayed her.
And that truthâ
Would stay with her forever.
Like a scar burned into her heart.
Her fingers trembled.
Her lips trembled.
But Chloe endured it again.
âItâs fine. Iâm not angry.â
She forced a smile.
âI skipped breakfast because my stomach isnât feeling well, Roeni.â
âReally? Maybe something you ate last night didnât sit well?â
Roeni covered her mouth and blinked her soft purple eyes.
She was still beautiful.
Even after spending the night out.
Chloe stood up.
âSorry, but I donât think I can have lunch either. I should go see a doctor.â
âBy yourself? You can just call the physician.â
Roeni tilted her head, concerned.
âShall I go with you, Chloe?â
Lucian spoke gently, as always.
He extended his hand toward her.
âThatâs what a husband should do.â
At that momentâ
Chloe remembered another man.
Standing in the falling snow.
Extending his hand in the same way.
And suddenlyâ
All her hesitation disappeared.
Thatâs right.
She was the one who rejected Karseinâs hand.
And she was the one who proposed the affair first.
So nowâ
What she had to doâ
Was not something as simple as slapping them.
