Just as Richard had predicted, Klaus accompanied them to the park.
Lena, who never expected Klaus to actually come along, was nervous the whole time in the carriage, but Klaus seemed interested only in Richard and was constantly checking on his younger brother.
Elvis secretly told me that it was very unusual for Richard to want to go outside. He doesn’t like to leave his room very often.
(I think boys around ten years old are more likely to want to leave their rooms on their own initiative, but Prince Richard is quite shy.)
It was strange, because from talking to him, he seemed like a lively boy his age.
When the carriage arrived at the park, we moved to a corner so as not to get in the way of anyone. The park by the river was very large, so there were few people around. This would allow us to look for birds in peace.
“Oh, there are lots of white birds over there! Are they pigeons?”
Lena immediately spotted them and pointed, and Richard quickly pulled out his sketchbook.
It seemed someone had scattered food, as the white pigeons were pecking intently at the ground.
Lena opened her sketchbook next to Richard, and Klaus, watching, widened his eyes.
“They look like brother and sister when they do that. They act so alike.”
Klaus, who doesn’t draw, would probably find it boring, but he seemed content just watching Richard sketch.
After finishing sketching the white pigeons, he walked around the park looking for other birds.
In the end, he’d finished sketching four different types of birds, and Richard looked satisfied.
“I got a lot done. I think I’ll sketch the river while I’m at it.”
“That sounds great! Let’s go!”
“Hey, don’t run!”
Lena and Richard held hands and headed toward the river, with Klaus following them.
After sketching countless times until the sun was setting, they returned to the castle, where Klaus looked apologetic as he checked the time.
“We’ve gone way over the agreed-upon time. Sorry. I’ll give you a special bonus.”
“No, don’t worry about it! I had fun!”
“That’s not possible. This is part of the contract.”
Just like Klaus. He’s so meticulous.
When he offered to take me home, I hopped into the same carriage, feeling a bit embarrassed. Klaus, who always had a stern expression except when Richard was around, suddenly relaxed.
“Richard looked like he was having fun today. It’s been a long time since I’ve seen my brother looking that happy. Thank you.”
Lena suddenly became concerned about the slightly distant atmosphere between Klaus and Richard that she had noticed for some time, but she didn’t feel it was a good idea to delve into the issue, so she just smiled.
“Richard seems to laugh a lot when you’re around. I’d like you to stay by Richard’s side if possible.”
“Of course, if that’s what you want…”
“I see. That would be a great help.”
Klaus paused, then spoke with determination.
“Have you noticed anything about Richard? Anything is fine.”
“Something you’ve noticed?”
It would probably be best not to mention their relationship.
Lena thought for a moment, then answered.
“He seems to like being able to look out at the garden from his room, but he doesn’t seem to like going down there. Is something wrong?”
Klaus started to gasp, then lowered his eyebrows.
“I see… Well, I have a hunch, but there’s probably nothing I can do about it.”
This, too, seemed like a problem that shouldn’t be delved into.
Lena just stared in silence at Klaus’s profile, as he looked out the window with a somewhat hurt look on his face.
