The Blessings of Latex Rubber and the Forest Purification Project
The “Life Improvement Plan” proposed by Akio was bringing new vitality to the village. Installing showers, developing swimsuit-appropriate fabrics, and exploring “rubber-like materials”—among these, the search for and processing of the “latex rubber trees” that Sylvia mentioned captured the keen interest of the village’s engineers.
Akio, Sylvia, Aruto, and a few villagers ventured deep into the forest and discovered several of these special trees. Under Sylvia’s guidance, they carefully harvested the latex in an environmentally conscious manner. Back in the village, the latex underwent repeated experimentation, based on Akio’s hazy memories from Earth, Sylvia’s knowledge of medicinal herbs and resins, and Dolgan’s experiential advice. They tested boiling temperatures, drying times, and combinations of herbs. After several weeks, they finally succeeded in creating a dark brown mass with a certain degree of elasticity and water resistance. It wasn’t perfect rubber, but it had the potential to significantly advance the village’s technology.
“We did it! This is enough for shower faucet washers and bathtub stoppers!” Dolgan exclaimed, fitting a prototype latex rubber stopper into a bathtub drain and checking its seal with satisfaction. Using this new material, the shower faucets and drain stoppers of the bathhouse were soon improved, making them far more convenient. The villagers expressed their joy at the more comfortable bathing experience.
Buoyed by the success of the latex rubber, Akio secretly began work on another prototype. This was his long-conceived “Akio-style cleansing device”—essentially a simple manual bidet. He attached a hand pump and thin nozzle made of bamboo and latex rubber to a small ceramic water tank. The completed prototype was installed in the private bathroom of the central hall where he lived with Sylvia.
“Sylvia, I’d like you to try something…” Akio said nervously, explaining how to use it. At first, Sylvia’s eyes widened in surprise, but once she tried it, she was astonished by its cleanliness and unexpected comfort.
“Akio… this is… wonderful. Especially for women, it provides an unparalleled level of hygiene,” she praised. Sylvia’s admiration became Akio’s greatest encouragement. He sensed that this device might eventually change the village’s overall concept of hygiene.
Meanwhile, as the village population grew and water usage in the bathhouse and homes increased, Akio began to realize the need for more serious measures to handle household wastewater and toilet waste. He gathered Sylvia, Dolgan, Ayane, and the village’s key members to raise the issue.
“Everyone, it’s great that the village is growing, but along with it, the amount of dirty water and waste from our daily lives is also increasing. If we leave it as is, it could eventually pollute this beautiful forest and river,” Akio warned.
Everyone nodded solemnly. Then Sylvia spoke quietly but with firm conviction:
“Akio is right. But the forest itself possesses a great power of self-purification. If we can assist and guide that power with our hands…”
Her proposal was a multi-stage “Forest’s Blessing Purification System,” utilizing the power of the Life Tree along with specific herbs, mosses, fungi, and soil microorganisms. The plan involved creating multiple purification tanks and filtration layers on natural slopes in a remote area downstream of the village, decomposing and neutralizing waste, and eventually returning purified water to nature or using it for specific (non-food) agricultural purposes.
“If this system is completed, waste will become valuable fertilizer, and water will once again become a blessing of the forest. Our village will not pollute nature but live in harmony with it, becoming part of its cycle.”
Sylvia’s words reflected the wisdom of the deep forest and a clear vision for the future.
Akio, Dolgan, and the villagers were deeply impressed by this grand, nature-harmonized idea. Thus, a new, forward-looking project began in their village. Simultaneously, Ayane and Celestina started teaching the villagers, especially the children, how to use the new toilets, the importance of water, and hygiene practices for living in harmony with the forest.
The small convenience brought by the discovery of latex rubber was on the verge of becoming a powerful catalyst, gradually transforming the village’s lifestyle and environmental consciousness.
