Pedestrians hurried along the street, all kinds of faces slipping past my eyes—each unfamiliar face seeming to carry a story of its own.

Tang Li wore a smile, as if he had long known we would meet here. He directly called me into the car.
I hesitated for a moment. It was really awkward to refuse him, so I opened the door and sat in the back seat.
“What? Not sitting in the front?”
Tang Li’s gaze swept across the rearview mirror as he started the engine.
I smiled. “No need. It’s troublesome to go around. That side is right on the road.” I made what I thought was a decent excuse. Tang Li didn’t pursue it further.
“By the way, I already know about the situation with the Yu family. What are you planning to do next?”
Hearing about the Yu family, my heart sank slightly. I didn’t want to concern myself too much with them anymore. Since the Yu family had already received the punishment they deserved, as long as things continued naturally, they would soon collapse on their own.
“Nothing much. I’m planning to resign first, change environments. If I keep staying there, the Yu family will sooner or later come looking for me.”
“Mm. I’ll make arrangements,” Yu Jin gave me an answer.
“No need. The Yu family is already in complete chaos right now. They won’t bother me for a while. I have enough time to find another job and change my surroundings.”
I never wanted to trouble Tang Li too much. The more I owed him, the harder it would be to untangle things.

Tang Li pondered for a moment but ultimately said nothing.
I knew what he meant. In his eyes, refusing his kindness at this time was probably just because I had gone through too much and hadn’t yet recovered.

“You’re alone out here now. Finding a job and a place to live won’t be convenient. If I help you, it’ll be better. Just as a friend—I should help you at a time like this.”
I shook my head and still didn’t agree in the end. I couldn’t owe Tang Li too much.
“What do you want to eat?” After getting nowhere, Tang Li changed the subject.
“Anything is fine. You can decide.”
I had originally just come out to buy some soy milk and steamed buns to fill my stomach. I hadn’t expected to wander all the way into the city center and run into Tang Li.
Tang Li turned the steering wheel.
“I know a breakfast place that’s pretty good. Want to try it?”
Tang Li’s life had always been somewhat different from mine. Over the years, though he lived frugally, he still came from a well-off family.
“Morning dim sum” was something different to me. My usual breakfast was simply called breakfast—soy milk, fried dough sticks, plain porridge. “Dim sum” was what people called a different kind of life.
