At last, a voice sounded—carrying a trace of helplessness and regret, along with deep remorse. I felt something drilling its way out from below me, and I couldn’t help but use every bit of strength I had left.

“Ah—” I cried out loudly, the sound piercing and hysterical. In that intensely painful instant, a sudden realization struck me. Could it be… my child?

The moment I became aware of that, I pushed even harder.

I had been pregnant for nine months already. If properly cared for, there shouldn’t have been a miscarriage…

I held onto tremendous hope, determined to give birth to this child, hoping to see a vivid, living little life.

But even after I felt that child had already come out, I still didn’t hear the clear, crisp cry of a newborn. I waited and waited—until I was wheeled out of that sealed room—and it was still utterly silent.

No—there were also a few sighs.

My whole body felt weak and limp, almost devoid of strength. Yet all I could see was an endless expanse of white, a whiteness that made me feel as though I’d fallen into an icy abyss.

Because at that moment, I heard the doctor beside me say, “We’re truly very sorry. The child couldn’t be saved…”

On the other side was an inexplicable silence.

A man stood in front of me, blocking the light above and casting a shadow over me. I couldn’t clearly see his expression, but I knew—it was Yu Jin.

I had no mind left to deal with him. All my attention was fixed on the doctor’s words. What did he just say? The child couldn’t be saved?

But… hadn’t the child already been delivered?

I didn’t know where the strength came from, but I suddenly exerted myself, trying to sit up. My body was far too weak; I had to brace myself against the edge beside me, trying several times before I finally managed to sit up.

Standing before me were two doctors. One of them, a female doctor, was holding something wrapped in cloth. Yet she didn’t look down at what she was holding—instead, she looked at me with a somewhat pitying expression.

A sudden clarity struck me. “Quick—quick, let me see… my child…”

I shouted, even reaching my hand toward the female doctor. I knew that at this moment, I must look extremely humble, completely disregarding my pride and dignity to beg someone. But deep down, I simply couldn’t accept that my child had already…

The female doctor glanced at me, hesitating. In her bright eyes was an emotion I couldn’t identify—so complex that I could no longer understand it.

However, the female doctor only shifted her steps slightly. Before I could even clearly see my child’s appearance, a cold, sharp voice interrupted, “It’s just a bastard anyway. Better that it’s dead.”

The chilling voice left no room for mercy. Every single word stabbed viciously into my heart—slash after slash. Even at a time like this, he felt not the slightest bit of guilt.

It was his doing. It had always been his fault!

Hatred surged in my heart as I fiercely lifted my eyes to glare at him. Then I saw that at some point he had already turned sideways, coldly looking down at me.

I could see his blade-sharp, handsome face filled with frost. In his deep-set brows and eyes was nothing but ice, along with profound disdain and disgust.

Even in a place like a hospital—where one could keenly feel the cold—I still thought it was nothing compared to the pain brought to me by his expression, by every move he made.

So he still cared, after all. I tugged at the corner of my lips, and then collapsed back down. I knew it was real—the child I had protected for nine months, my constant spiritual support, was gone just like that.

An indescribable emptiness filled my heart. I couldn’t help but reach out to touch my lower abdomen, only to feel that there was no longer the slightest movement there. It was flat, as if no life had ever existed there at all.

My hand moved back and forth. My body was warm, but my hands were cold. Amid that clash of warmth and chill, I felt only numbness—no desire to think, no desire to do anything anymore.

After a long, long time, I heard the female doctor’s voice again:

“Then this child…”
