Chapter 20
I clutched Tang Li’s hand as if grasping a lifeline, grabbed it tightly, and asked urgently, “You took the wrong test results, didn’t you? Didn’t you?”
Because my movements were too abrupt, the needle on the back of my hand shifted out of place and quickly began to swell.
But I couldn’t care about that. My mind was completely filled with the word pregnant.
Tang Li pried my hand open and turned his head away. “I’ll call the nurse.”
My heart sank, little by little.
I laughed—a laugh tinged with mockery.
Was God playing a joke on me? I had finally made up my mind to get a divorce, and yet I ended up pregnant.
Between Tang Li and me, it really was impossible now, wasn’t it?
The matter of me calling the police also quickly reached my parents-in-law.
If it hadn’t been for Tang Li, they probably would have rushed at me and beaten me.
My mother-in-law, as outspoken as ever, ignored the fact that this was a hospital and started hurling abuse. “Meng Yanshuang, you shameless thing! How dare you call the police!”
I said nothing. I didn’t even have the energy to argue with them.
But my silence only made my mother-in-law more arrogant. “So what if you called the police? As long as you’re not divorced from Yu Jin, you’re still the daughter-in-law of our Yu family!”
A young nurse couldn’t stand it anymore and tried to stop her. “Sir, ma’am, this is a hospital. Please keep your voices down.”
How could my mother-in-law listen? She shoved the nurse, making her stumble, and pressed on aggressively. “Meng Yanshuang, say something! Why don’t you dare speak now? Have you become mute?”
“Weren’t you bold enough to call the police?”
Her loud, forceful voice echoed throughout the entire hospital.
I clenched my hands tightly, no longer knowing whether getting pregnant at this moment was a good thing or a bad thing.
I simply wasn’t prepared to welcome a child into this chaotic and turbulent time.
Tang Li had been watching my condition the whole time. Probably because he was too worried, he couldn’t help but threaten my parents-in-law. “Stop arguing! Wait until the police arrive and see how you argue then.”
Unexpectedly, the police became their leverage instead. My mother-in-law raised her chin arrogantly. “Young man, didn’t you hit me earlier? Go on, hit me again! Hit me! This old woman isn’t afraid. The police have already been called—maybe it’ll be you who gets arrested!”
My mother-in-law’s shrew-like behavior gave me a headache. Tang Li was also stunned by her shamelessness—there was no reasoning with her.
This torturous scene finally came to an end when the police arrived, and my parents-in-law were frightened into silence.
Just as the police were about to question me in detail, Yu Jin arrived.
Without a word, he dropped to his knees beside my hospital bed, crying with snot and tears streaming down his face as he begged for my forgiveness. “Yanshuang, I was wrong! Can we not get divorced? I’ll definitely treat you well!”
“I’ll cut ties with everyone else and devote myself to you wholeheartedly.”
I had never seen Yu Jin so humble and submissive before, and unexpectedly, I felt a bit pleased.
Seeing that I had no reaction, Yu Jin grabbed my hand and continued crying. “I didn’t know you were pregnant. If I had known, I would never have done something so inhuman.”
“Not only will I treat you well, I’ll treat the child well too. You don’t want the child to be born without a father, do you?”
I tugged at my hand, but couldn’t pull it free.
To be honest, I wavered. He was right—I could choose not to think about myself, but I had to think about the child.
But would Yu Jin really do as he said? I didn’t know.
My stepmother also hurried over and immediately began persuading me. “Yanshuang, if you get divorced, what about the child? How will you raise it on your own?”
“Not to mention whether we can even pay back the exorbitant bride price— even if we do, what will the child eat? What will the child use?”
My heart wavered completely.
She continued, “Children are angels sent by heaven. How could you bear to let him suffer with you?”
