chapter 40
Thanks to being able to save more money on furniture than expected, Serena was able to purchase everything—bedding, carpets, chandeliers, and even wall decorations.
As a result, Royal Belmar erupted in chaos as if struck by lightning.
Because she had confidently promised to deliver everything immediately, she had to contact various people and arrange carriages to transport the furniture.
With the help of several people, Serena successfully finished her shopping and returned home.
As soon as the carriage stopped in front of the house, Daisy ran out, screaming.
“Whyyy! Why are you only here now?! I haven’t had lunch or dinner!”
It was such a predictable reaction that even Sophia wasn’t surprised anymore.
Daisy, who had previously complained about not eating despite having food, froze when she saw the procession of carriages stopped outside.
“W-What is… that?!”
The carriage carrying large items like beds and sofas was massive, plain and utilitarian since it was meant for transport.
Intimidated by the enormous carriages, Daisy stepped back cautiously.
“Did… did you do something wrong?!”
Mistaking it for a prison carriage, Daisy grabbed Serena’s wrist and shook her violently.
Serena’s whole body shook from the rough handling. As she tried to break free, Daisy finally let go when several people got out of the carriage.
Assuming they had come to take Serena away, Daisy panicked and ran inside.
“Mom! Mom! Mom—! Something terrible has happened! She must’ve caused an accident!”
Rihanna, who had been resting with no concern for Serena’s delay, came out of her room, irritated.
“What’s going on at this hour? An accident? If she was late, she should have quietly gone upstairs to sleep, so why all this noise?”
Even though it was Daisy who had been noisy, Rihanna naturally scolded Serena.
Daisy grabbed Rihanna’s arm.
“Hurry! Quick! Come see this!”
“…Good grief.”
Pulled along unexpectedly, Rihanna frowned deeply. She clutched her shawl over her pajamas and went pale at the sight of the strangers.
“W-What is all this…? Who are these people?!”
“I told you! She caused an accident! They’ve come to catch her! They even brought her all the way in a carriage!”
“Good heavens…”
Daisy ran around like crazy, while Rihanna covered her mouth with her hand.
The employees at the furniture store suppressed laughter at the absurd scene, where no one had said anything yet and everyone was imagining the worst.
Meanwhile, an employee carefully placing a large sofa asked Serena,
“Where should we put this?”
“Just bring it in. The house isn’t that big, so you’ll see immediately. Place it where the current sofa is and remove the old one.”
“Understood.”
With so much furniture to move, the employees worked efficiently.
Soon, the dining table and chairs arrived. Rihanna, blinking in surprise, hurried over to Serena.
“What is all this…?!”
“It’s new furniture. The old ones were too worn out and even broken, so I bought new ones.”
“Miss, where is the dining area?”
“Sophia, please guide them.”
“Yes, Miss.”
Those carrying the dining furniture followed Sophia into the house.
Without a moment’s rest, the next carriage arrived with a bed made of light-colored wood, elegant in design.
Leading the way, Serena guided the bed-carrying employees inside, with Daisy and Rihanna sticking close by.
“Is this real? Is this all ours? Did you get mine too? You did, right? Huh? Huh?!”
Daisy fussed loudly. Serena put a finger to her lips.
“I did. But you have to stay quiet if you want it. Don’t say a word and sit on the new sofa. If you speak even once, I’ll return it. Understand?”
Daisy, having learned from experience, kept her mouth shut and nodded vigorously before running to the living room.
“Mother, too.”
“…!”
It was now Rihanna’s turn to get noisy. Unlike Daisy, she wasn’t simple, so she immediately got flustered.
“You! Are you telling me to keep quiet?!”
“No. You need to watch the next carriage. I bought furniture for you, Dad, and my sister, and it’ll be arriving soon. Just tell us where to place everything.”
When Serena reminded her that she was the lady of the house, Rihanna’s expression softened. There was no need to complain when they were buying furniture she had long wanted.
Still, she didn’t want to show her excitement, so she forced herself to remain calm.
“That’s true. But next time, please tell me in advance. What is this, coming home at this hour…”
Despite her scolding, her steps were surprisingly light as she walked away. Night, day, or early morning didn’t seem to matter.
By early morning, Serena had checked all the furniture, bedding, and the tableware that had arrived in between. Exhausted, she fell into a deep sleep.
Although she wanted to enjoy sleeping on her new bed and bedding, thoughts of her next task woke her early.
‘I need to visit Rosegold.’
Her dilapidated home had been somewhat organized, but she still needed to inspect Rosegold. There, she would assess the inherited wealth and decide how to move forward.
Preferring to go alone, she thought it best to inform someone anyway.
After waking early, Serena checked Rosegold-related information once more and headed to the dining room for breakfast.
“Father is here too.”
Ashbel, who had been confined to his room for days, looked around the dining room.
Since he hadn’t cried, it seemed he hadn’t heard news from Starlight yet. Serena felt relieved and sat down. Rihanna and Daisy soon appeared.
“…I’m really in a bad mood this morning.”
Rihanna, who usually felt cheerful thanks to the cozy bedding, saw Ashbel and froze.
Meanwhile, Daisy admired the new dining table and chairs, exclaiming in delight.
“Mom! Aren’t these even better than the chairs at Count Roselantis’ estate?! They’re so soft! They don’t creak even if I move around! Look!”
Leaning on the chair, Daisy flailed about. The couple, exasperated, turned their gaze elsewhere.
Seated apart, Sophia brought pre-meal drinks in elegant cups, prompting Daisy to make more noise. Serena realized this would probably happen every time new tableware appeared.
After sipping her juice, Serena spoke.
“I’m going to Rosegold.”
Both parents, curious, turned to her.
Rihanna frowned.
“Again yesterday and now this! Why are you always so sudden? Why don’t you ever ask first?!”
Finding something to scold, Rihanna continued ranting.
Serena, looking at her in disbelief, said calmly,
“I’ll go alone. And when did you ever actually pay attention to me? You don’t have to worry this time, either.”
Since Rihanna hadn’t really cared until now, she had no retort.
Still annoyed, she tried to argue, but Ashbel, who had been silent, suddenly spoke up.
“I’m coming too. The land is yours, but I’m responsible for the title, so I should go.”
It wasn’t out of responsibility.
Having had nothing in his possession, he thought he might grab something if he followed Serena to Rosegold.
“The carriage will be ready soon. Is that okay?”
“Of course. It doesn’t matter when.”
He seemed eager to go quickly. Serena, seeing through his motives, allowed him to accompany her.
She didn’t intend to strengthen her father-daughter relationship on this trip.
‘If he’s going to cause trouble, I’ll just leave him at Rosegold.’
He had spent his life causing trouble; it might be better to take him far away and leave him there.
