Story 28
The Smiling Portrait
Grandpa died three years ago.
In the end, he suffered from cancer before passing away.
And yet, sometimes, Grandpa’s memorial portrait smiles.
His portrait is displayed on the left side of the family altar, together with the photos of my great-grandfather and great-grandmother.
Usually, it’s just a picture of Grandpa sitting firmly in a chair, looking serious.
But every once in a while—his face in the portrait smiles.
Sometimes, it’s the same gentle smile he used to show us when he was alive.
Other times, it’s a cold, twisted grin I’ve never seen before.
And occasionally, it turns into an eerie, unpleasant smirk—something hard to describe, but definitely unsettling.
I have no idea why his portrait smiles.
But it really does—often.
Why does this happen?
What is Grandpa trying to tell us?
I truly have no idea.
