Chapter 6
Honestly, there was no need to askâ
it was obviously something brought for his commander.
Still, Dan planned to decide whether to confiscate it or let it pass depending on what it was.
ââŚTheyâre cookies for the Duke.â
Lady Jibon answered with a troubled face.
Cookies.
That was unfortunate.
Most of the cookies brought by ladies like this before had been mixed with strange potions.
Some were harmlessâ
but nine out of ten were not.
Dan held back a sigh.
âWhy are they all the same?â
Trespassing.
Cookies with love potions.
âDo they really think the Commander would eat that?â
Really?
That Duke Roeln?
Even if he didâ
what then?
Dan kept his expression calm and held out his hand.
âCookies. Such a thoughtful gift. Please give them to me. Since they are so full of sincerity, I will personally deliver them to the Commander.â
The ladiesâexcept Ivenneâwere startled.
âN-no! Thatâs alright!â
âY-yes, itâs fine!â
âIs that so? I was trying to deliver such a sincere gift for you.â
âHow unfortunate.â
Dan muttered as if truly disappointed.
The ladies exchanged glances.
Thenâ
âCan we deliver them ourselves to Duke Roeln?â
âYes. We made these cookies carefully while thinking of him. We want to deliver our feelings personally. Please, Sir Brown?â
Standing beside them, Ivenne turned pale.
âTheyâre saying that after all that scolding?!â
She glanced at Dan nervously.
âThen, I will deliver them.â
Dan took the basket from Lady Jibon almost forcefully.
The ladiesâ faces turned paleâthen red.
Their plan had been simple:
Make the Duke eat the cookies,
let the potion take effect,
and then one of them would spend the night with himâ
and force him to take responsibility.
But nowâ
everything was falling apart.
âHow rude!â
âHow can you just take it like that?! Do you know who I am?!â
âThatâs right! We canât let this go!â
âWhen Duke Roeln arrives, we will formally complain!â
But Danâs expression didnât change.
Insteadâ
âLadies.â
His voice turned firm.
âI said I will deliver your very special cookies. Did you not understand?â
âSpecialâŚ?â
Only thenâ
their faces turned completely pale.
Their hands trembled.
They realizedâ
he had known from the beginning.
Ivenne, the only one unaware, just stood there confused, holding her document envelope.
Stillâ
she was just relieved the scolding hadnât started again.
Dan clicked his tongue inwardly.
âAt least they realize theyâre in trouble.â
The ladies looked like they might cry, biting their lips.
But their pride wouldnât allow them to beg.
âIâd like to throw them all in prisonâŚâ
Butâ
as alwaysâ
nothing would happen to them.
âWhy does the Commander always let this go?!â
Dan grumbled internally.
Even with clear evidenceâ
nothing would be done.
And after a few daysâ
they would come back again.
So he ignored them.
âLadies, it would be best for you to return home now.â
At his firm dismissal, Lady Jibon looked miserable and clutched her dress.
Lady A whispered, âLadyâŚâ and she finally moved.
As she leftâ
she glared at Ivenne.
And so did the other lady.
âWhy are they glaring at me?!â
âDid I take the cookies? Did I chase you out?!â
Ivenne was furious.
But while she was distractedâ
Danâs eyes had shifted to the envelope she was holding tightly.
âWhat is thatâŚ?â
A document envelope.
New.
Andâ
pants under her cloak.
âA lady wearing pants⌠thatâs new.â
She looked almost convincingâ
like she actually came on official business.
âLady.â
Ivenne flinched.
âMe?â
âYes. What is that?â
He pointed at the envelope.
âItâs a document envelope.â
ââŚWhatâs inside?â
âDocuments.â
âMay I see?â
âNo. Itâs confidential.â
Dan was stunned.
âShe says it so confidentlyâŚâ
âIs that so?â
âYes.â
âThen I will check this confidential document.â
âI said you canât. Only the Commander of the First Knight Order can see it.â
Dan almost believed her.
Thenâ
âOh, I forgot to introduce myself. Iâm Ivenne Haiwen from the Magic Tower. I came regarding a contract. I have an appointment with the Commander at 5. I came early in case the checkpoint delayed me.â
She didnât say:
âSo I ended up getting scolded for nothing.â
She thought that explanation was enough.
Butâ
Dan was speechless.
âWow⌠stalkers are getting more advancedâŚâ
As far as he knewâ
there were no female mages in the Tower.
âIf youâre going to lie, why say the Magic Tower?â
Compared to previous ladiesâ
she was worse.
âThen why were you hiding?â
ââŚThatâsâŚâ
Ivenne hesitated.
âWhy canât you answer?â
âItâs not that I canâtââ
âItâs embarrassing!â
How could she say she hid because of those ladies?
She stayed silent.
Dan crossed his arms.
âJust as I thoughtâŚâ
Then he looked at her again.
Rings.
Bracelets.
Earrings.
âToo many jewels for someone on official work.â
Now even her cloak seemed suspicious.
âIs she hiding a dress under that?â
âThe truth is⌠I do have a reason. But I really have a 5 oâclock appointment. Can I go in now?â
Ivenne glanced anxiously at the entrance.
âItâs not past 5 yet⌠right?â
She had never been late before.
âLady.â
She turned again.
âYou bribed the checkpoint. You disguised yourself. You lied to meet the Commander.â
âIâll pretend I didnât see it. Just give me that envelope and leave.â
Dan held out his hand.
Ivenne stared at it blankly.
Thenâ
looked up, shocked.
âWhat?! Bribed? Disguised? What nonsense is this?!â
âI came from the Magic Tower! I have a 5 oâclock appointment!â
âLying is bad, Lady!â
âIâm not lying! Canât you see the seal on this?!â
ââŚYou even forged the Magic Tower seal.â
Ivenne almost exploded.
âAre you serious?!â
âJust come inside and confirm with the Commander!â
She had never wanted to see Duke Roeln this much before.
âLady. Even if you meet him like this, it will only have the opposite effect. No one would like a woman who lies and chases after them like this. It would be better to act crazy and approach him at a ball.â
âI also think thââ
She quickly covered her mouth.
That wasnât the point.
Dan narrowed his eyes.
Ivenne felt stuck.
How was she supposed to get past him?
âUgh⌠I really need to go inâŚâ
She tried acting cute.
Butâ
Danâs expression became even scarier.
She immediately stopped.
âAh!â
She clapped her hands.
âI found a way to prove it!â
