Chapter 7
âMiss, the bath is ready. Will you bathe now?â
âYes. I think I sweated too much. I feel uncomfortable.â
âYes, then this wayââ
As Shan led Amanda toward the bath, voices could be heard outside.
Confused murmurs from the maidsâŠ
and a sharp, loud womanâs voice.
Amanda looked at Shan. Shan tilted her head, also confused.
âMiss, please wait. Iâll go check.â
âNo. Iâll go too.â
ââŠPardon?â
âIn the Moonlight Palace, Iâm the only one allowed to raise my voice.â
âIf someone else was shouting, the maids would have stopped them already.â
âBut right now⊠they havenât.â
Shan nodded in agreement.
Amanda stepped forward and walked out.
As soon as the doors opened, Amanda once again leaned weakly on Shan, taking slow steps.
Thenâ
Deborahâs voice rang out.
âHow dare a mere maid block my way!â
âHer Majesty the Empress is unwell and cannot meet visitors right now.â
âI am the Imperial Consort! The one favored by the Emperor!â
âBy status and by family, I am above that Empress!â
âWhat gives you the courage to act so boldly?!â
âTo meet Her Majesty, you must send notice in advance.â
âEven the Former Emperor sent word a day earlier before meeting her.â
âHow can you be so rude, Imperial Consort?â
âWhat?!â
âThe person you wish to meet is the mother of this empire.â
âPlease show proper respect.â
âOh⊠that maid speaks well.â
Amanda quietly closed the door again and watched.
It was Margaret Cliff.
Unlike the other maids, she never comforted Amanda with pity.
She simply did her job.
âCome to think of it⊠sheâs also one of the few who never received help from me.â
Amanda smiled slightly.
âI thought she was just quiet⊠but she speaks well when needed.â
Then suddenlyâ
Deborah raised her hand.
Slap!
â!â
âAh, so this is why youâre so arrogant.â
âWhat? Empress? A woman who cannot even bear a child?â
âYou swear loyalty to someone who might die at any moment?â
âI can already see what kind of life youâll live.â
ââŠ.â
âTell her yourselfââ
âI donât know what she said to the Former EmperorâŠâ
âBut sheâd better not try any tricks.â
ââŠ.â
âThen again, sheâs just an empty Empress who canât do anything.â
Deborah and her maids laughed mockingly.
Margaretâs cheek was red with a clear handprint.
She trembled with angerâ
But said nothing.
She only glared at Deborah.
Behind the doorâ
Amanda and Shan watched everything.
Shan looked at Amanda nervously.
âMissâŠâ
Amandaâs eyes stayed fixed on Deborah.
âShan. Get ready.â
ââŠFor what?â
âTo scream.â
ââŠWhat?â
Before Shan could reactâ
Amanda opened the door without hesitation.
Chapter 3; Omen
Creakâ
As the heavy door opened, all eyes turned toward Amanda.
Suddenly, Amanda clutched her chest and began gasping.
âHaah⊠haah⊠n-nanny!â
âYour Majesty! What is happening?! Youâgo call the royal physician at once!â
âYes, yes!â
âYour Majesty, can you see me? Are you alright?â
âIt hurts⊠it hurts, nanny⊠it hurtsâŠâ
Tears streamed down Amandaâs face.
The maids panicked, not knowing what to do.
Deborahâs expression hardened as she watched.
Shanâs eyes turned cold as she shouted at Deborah.
âImperial Consort, this is too much!â
âWhat?â
âDid you have to drag out someone this sickâafter even striking a maid?!â
âWas it that important?!â
âWhat nonsense! Have you gone mad?â
âYes, I have! Iâve gone mad!â
âWhere else would you find an Imperial Consort who treats the Empress like this?!â
âHow dare you! Youâre just a commoner nannyâ!â
âHaah⊠haah⊠s-stop, nanny⊠cough!â
Amanda grabbed Shanâs arm weakly.
Shan hugged her tightly.
Amanda covered her mouth, pretending to cough.
âAh⊠this might hurt a bit.â
After a brief hesitationâ
Amanda closed her eyes and pressed her finger deep into her throat.
âNa⊠nanny⊠ugh!â
Instead of vomit, bitter stomach acid came out.
Her throat burned sharply.
Shan looked shocked.
âThatâs a bit too much, missâŠâ
âY-Your Majesty!â
âAre you alright?!â
âYour Majesty!â
The maids rushed over, their faces full of worry.
Even though the smell was strong and unpleasantâ
No one showed discomfort.
Even when it splashed onto their clothes, no one complained.
âIâm fine⊠Iâm alrightâŠâ
âBut⊠are you okay?â
Amanda smiled weakly and reached out to touch Margaretâs cheek.
But Margaret firmly shook her head.
ââŠHuh?â
Amanda paused for a moment, then returned to her weak expression.
Footsteps approached quickly.
The royal physician arrived.
Ignoring Deborah completely, he rushed to Amanda.
âYour Majesty, are you alright?â
âHaah⊠haah⊠it hurts⊠it hurts so muchâŠâ
âShe had trouble breathing and suddenly vomited stomach fluid.â
âI must check your pulse.â
He held her wrist.
Amanda trembled slightly.
Deborah watched silently.
After checking, the physician spoke.
âThere is no immediate problem.â
âHowever, Your Majesty is weak and must rest completely.â
âI have told you this many times.â
âI⊠I apologize. My body is so weakâŠâ
âIt is not your fault.â
âIt is the fault of those who failed to care for you properly.â
The physician glared at the maidsâand Deborah.
The maids lowered their heads.
Deborah met his gaze without fear.
âSo it was her.â
The physician clicked his tongue.
âI will prepare medicine to calm your body and mind. Please rest.â
âYes, Your Majesty. We will help you.â
Supported by the maids, Amanda returned inside.
Deborah watched her leaveâ
Without even pretending to be concerned.
She scoffed.
âWhat a pointless scene.â
âLetâs go.â
âI need a bath.â
Deborah left, followed by her maids.
Soonâ
The Moonlight Palace became quiet again.
âIâm sorry.â
ââŠYes.â
ââŠ.â
âOh?â
Amanda looked at Margaret with a tilted gaze.
Usually, when someone apologizes, the reply is âItâs okay.â
But âYesâ meantâ
âYou did do something worth apologizing for.â
âSheâs speaking to me like that?â
Amanda suppressed her irritation and smiled gently.
She reached out to touch Margaretâs swollen cheek.
âIf this happens again, just stay still.â
âWhat if it leaves a scar?â
ââŠA scarâŠ?â
âIs that really what youâre worried about, Your Majesty?â
ââŠWhat?â
Amanda stared at her.
âIs she angry at me?â
Amanda glanced at Shan.
Shan shrugged, confused.
Amanda cleared her throat and spoke softly, her voice trembling.
She held Margaretâs hand tightly.
âOf course Iâm worried.â
âYou are my maid, no matter what happens.â
âI donât want my maids to suffer because of me.â
âSo please⊠promise me this wonât happen again.â
ââŠ.â
âIâm afraid something bad will happen to you.â
âPlease promise me.â
Behind the door, the other maids were already crying.
But Margaretâ
Remained silent.
Her expression was firm.
After a long pause, she finally spoke.
âIf you are truly worried about usâŠâ
ââŠYes?â
âThen why donât you raise your authority as the Empress?â
ââŠ.â
âToday would not have happened if your authority was higher than the Imperial Consortâs.â
âEven if the Emperor favors herâŠâ
âYou are still the only Empress of this empire.â
âBut right now, Your MajestyâŠâ
âWhy is she acting like that?â
âHas she gone crazy?â
The maids whispered outside.
Shanâs eyes sharpened, about to step inâ
But Amanda quietly stopped her.
Amanda bit the inside of her cheek and smiled weakly.
Seeing that smile, Margaretâs tone softened slightly.
âI told the physician to bring medicine.â
âApply it so it wonât scar.â
ââŠ.â
âYou must be tired. Go rest.â
âAndâŠâ
ââŠ.â
âIâm sorry.â
A single tear fell onto Amandaâs pale hand.
The maids gasped outside.
But Margaretâ
Showed no reaction.
She bowed and quietly left.
The moment Margaret leftâ
Amandaâs expression turned cold.
She raised her eyes sharply and signaled Shan.
Shan noddedâ
And sent all the maids, including Margaret, out of the Moonlight Palace.
