Chapter 27

When I thought about it, it was strange.

People always said I wrote well, but my imagination had always been lacking.
So how did someone like me manage to write an entire serial novel without stopping?

If I hadn’t met Yvonne, I never would’ve known the reason.

“Why did you bring me here?”

“Because…”

She hesitated for a moment before continuing.

“Because you’re me.”

“Yeah. In a way, that’s true.”

After all, I was now possessing Yvonne’s body.
But I wasn’t Yvonne. I was Yvona.

“At the very least, I thought the me from the next life wouldn’t be swayed by Raphael.
But even in the next life, you couldn’t forget him. You kept chasing after him.”

Her words hit me like a blow to the back of the head.
In an instant, fragments of Yvonne’s life I had never known flashed before my eyes.

And finally, I understood.

The reason I kept getting tangled up with Raphael, why I couldn’t escape the emotions that weren’t mine—

Yvonne was my past life.

I hadn’t been writing a novel. I’d been writing a diary.

Since my past self had died by poison, of course I hadn’t known what would happen afterward.

Who was I to write a novel, anyway?

It made sense now. I’d never cared about celebrities or romance, but one day I found myself hopelessly drawn to Rael for no reason—and even I thought it was strange.

It must have been because he resembled Raphael.

I sat there reflecting for a long while.

I’d been living halfheartedly, hiding behind the excuse that I’d transmigrated into a fictional world. But now that I knew Yvonne was me, I’d live properly this time.

The good news was that Yvonne had been born with a silver spoon in her mouth, able to live the lazy, luxurious life I had always dreamed of.

The problem was—

“I’m too weak.”

I’d start working out tomorrow. Swimming first. Definitely swimming.

Knock.

Or… was that even a knock? It came from the direction of the window, not the door.

“What the—?”

When I turned my head, I froze.

An owl was staring straight at me through the window.
When our eyes met, it bumped its body against the glass insistently, as if telling me to open it.

What is this? Did I just get chosen or something? Do owls even pick humans? Should I be calling an animal documentary team?

Then I noticed the small piece of paper tied to its leg. A message—someone had sent me something.

“What is this, a magic school?”

The moment I opened the window, the owl stretched its leg toward me as if it had been waiting for that cue.

I took the note, wondering if I should at least give it a snack in return, but before I could, it flew off into the night.
Smart and diligent little guy.

I stared blankly at its retreating figure, then snapped out of it and unfolded the note.

Are you feeling okay?

I tilted my head. Sweet of them to worry—but who was it?

Then I noticed a tiny rose drawn in the corner, and realization hit me.

It must be the same person who sent me that rose.

And if the owl had delivered it, that meant the sender couldn’t be too far away.

I wanted to confirm my guess immediately, so I slipped quietly out of my room.

Luckily, the mansion was silent—it was late at night.
I crept through the halls, slipped past the front door, and stepped out into the cool air.

And there he was.

“Hey.”

I couldn’t help but smile. I knew it was you, Theo.

“How did you even find my house?”

Worried someone in the mansion might see him, I hurried Theo into my room.

“There are ways to find out,” he said with a grin. “Are you feeling better?”

“Yeah, since I woke up earlier, I’m fine. But how did you know I was sick?”

He shrugged lightly. “Because you’re famous?”

Fair point. I was the only noble lady in the Empire.

And after Raphael’s broken engagement and Cedric’s very public confession, my name had spread even further.

Now that I thought about it, all I’d done since coming back was stir up ridiculous rumors.

“Was it you who sent the rose?”

Theo nodded. Just as I thought.

“Thanks for the flower. But… why a rose?”

“I don’t know. I just couldn’t decide, so I ruled out white and yellow.”

“Yeah, I’ve gotten enough white flowers to last a lifetime.”

Mostly white lilies, to be exact. Still, I wondered why he’d avoided yellow. Maybe he just didn’t like the color.

“Thanks again. But you don’t have to send them every day—it’s a waste.”

“Not a waste for you.”

I couldn’t stop the smile tugging at my lips.

A commoner saying it wasn’t a waste to spend money on me, a wealthy noblewoman? It almost sounded like he liked me.

“So… how did you end up falling into the water?”

His tone was serious as he asked, so I told him everything I remembered.

That I’d gone out with Nathan and Richard, that I’d been on the boat with Richard—and that it capsized.

“Talk about bad luck. Of all times for the boat to flip… I barely made it out alive.”

“That’s strange.”

Theo rested his chin on his hand, thinking deeply.

“It was just an accident,” I said with a laugh. “Why do you look so serious?”

“Because it doesn’t make sense. The boat flipped the exact moment you tried to step off. That’s… suspicious.”

“Guess I was just unlucky.”

“Or maybe it wasn’t your luck. Maybe someone made it happen.”

I blinked. What, is he the suspicious type?

If someone really had caused it, that would mean someone out there held a grudge against me.

But that couldn’t be. I’d lived decently enough.

“I’ll have you know I’m a good person. I haven’t done anything worth hating me for.”

“Sometimes it doesn’t matter,” Theo said quietly. “Even if you’ve done nothing wrong, people hurt others just to protect their own place.
Even if the person they hurt never wanted that place to begin with.”

“You’re not… achoo!

His expression turned so bitter I almost asked more—but I sneezed before I could get the words out.

“Sorry for showing up so late. You should get some rest,” he said quickly, standing up.

Normally, I would’ve seen him out right away, but for some reason, I didn’t want the night to end.

Maybe it was because he was the first visitor of the day who wasn’t Raphael.
Or maybe I just hated leaving questions unanswered.

“It’s cold out. Go back inside,” he said, worry flickering in his eyes.

“I’m fine. I’ll see you out properly.”

Ignoring his concern, I walked beside him toward the mansion gates.

Don’t ask, I told myself.

Whatever story was hiding behind Theo’s expression, I’d leave it alone.
If it was true, it must’ve left a wound. There was no reason to dig it open just to satisfy my curiosity.

“Come by again sometime.”

We were lucky—no guards crossed our path on the way to the entrance.

Good thing, though… maybe they were slacking a bit too much.

“Alright. Next time, I’ll visit during the day. It’s too cold at night.”

I watched him disappear down the road before slipping quietly back inside.

And the very next morning—Theo showed up again, bright and early.

For a brief moment, I seriously wondered if he was secretly a scammer, not a messenger.

(Excerpt)

“Damn it—what is this!?”

Emperor Edouard’s crimson eyes burned with fury.
He ripped the paper in half, then threw the shreds to the floor.

“Who dares do this!?”

“I apologize, Your Majesty. The knights are searching for the culprit.”

“Find them immediately. And from this moment on, anyone who speaks of this will be executed.”

“Yes, Your Majesty.”

“Leave me.”

Once the attendant was gone, Emperor Edouard fell into thought. Who could it be?

At dawn, someone had plastered notes all across the Empire, revealing his most guarded secret.

‘Emperor Edouard is not the former Emperor’s biological son.’

By now, every noble in the Norbert Empire had likely seen it.

Luckily, there was no evidence—just words on paper. If he denied it firmly enough, the matter could be buried.

But who… who could know?

All proof was gone. His mother and the late Emperor Alexandre were both dead.

And besides, Edouard bore crimson eyes—the mark of the royal family, passed down from Alexandre’s brother, his supposed father.
No one would dare doubt him now.

He took a slow breath, calming his nerves.

No… it can’t be…

Two eyes flashed in his memory—eyes that had glared at him in bitter betrayal before death.

The red eyes of the man who’d learned the truth right before dying.

“If we ever meet again, I’ll reclaim what’s mine.”

“We’ll see about that. Goodbye, my dear brother, Théodebert.”

That man was long dead. His life had been stubbornly hard to take, but Edouard had managed in the end.

Five times he’d sent assassins—five failures. Each one had died instead.

In the end, he’d bribed Théodebert’s loyal servant, Gabriel, to poison him.
It had worked.

Of course, guilt had followed. He’d even had nightmares that night.

“I had no choice…” he muttered.

Keeping his brother alive would’ve meant losing his own throne. It had been the only way.

But someone else knows…

Pressing his fingers to his temple, Edouard suddenly stopped and smirked.

There was no proof left. The only son of Emperor Alexandre was dead, and the throne belonged to him now. No one could dispute that.

Maybe this rumor was nothing more than a ploy by his enemies to weaken him.

Either way, I’ll find whoever spread it… and kill them.

Truth or lie—it didn’t matter.

Edouard’s fist clenched tightly.

Meanwhile, the one who’d spread the rumor—

“What’s with that look?”

“Why? Do I look weird?”

“Well… not weird, exactly…”

They were already drawing suspicion with their sudden movements.

→ Who’s this ‘Enegla’?
→ Probably short for Théodebert, right? Theo’s brother??
→ Have I read too many romance-fantasy novels or did I just see the name Gabriel too?
→ Yeah, early on Theo sighed saying he couldn’t see the heroine because he was meeting Gabriel.
→ Wait, so Theo survived the poison?
→ Didn’t the heroine survive poison too?
→ What is it with this novel—why doesn’t poison ever work??

I possessed the female protagonist of a regret novel I was writing. The problem is, because I'd been writing it for years, I had no idea what was going on. The first thing I did as soon as I was possessed was , "It's been a bother, hasn't it? Let 's just call it quits." I thought she'd be clingy, but regret was a total bummer. She misunderstood me as a desperate attempt to get her attention. So I said, "I'm so glad you like her ." I went on a blind date with a handsome guy and said, "Unlike anyone else, I'm confident I'll only have eyes for you, Yvonne, for the rest of my life." I even received a public proposal from a childhood friend and said, "This is the best place for me. Isn't this where we first met?" I started dating my sister's friend and started looking for a new man. "Is a man who likes other women your style?" Of course, I got a beating from a man I didn't even know. The result! "Let's forget our past and start over." As I'd hoped, the male protagonist began to regret, and I was just picking and choosing the best man... "Give up. You're not going anywhere anyway." I didn't know I'd be smitten by such a ruthless, obsessive man. I never thought a regret novel would turn into a story of obsession. Does anyone know how to escape?
