“Big sister, a really amazing package just arrived!”
While heading down the stairs to the dining room for breakfast, Alex ran over to Lena, his face flushed.
“A package?”
Not understanding what he meant, Lena tilted her head in confusion. But Alex grabbed her hand and pulled her inside the dining room.
When she looked, there were five boxes of various sizes stacked on the dining table, and Lena’s eyes widened in surprise.
“What’s this?”
“It just arrived a little while ago! When my father saw the sender, he turned as pale as ash over there.”
“My father?!”
Looking closer, she saw her father, buried behind the boxes, sitting limply with a vacant expression, as if his soul had left his body.
Curious about who had sent the packages, Lena checked the sender’s name. Her eyes went wide in disbelief.
“Lord Klaus?!”
“Lord Klaus? The Chancellor? This looks unmistakably like a gift, right? Why would the Chancellor be sending a gift to my older sister?”
“I have no idea myself!”
Realizing it was best to check the contents immediately, Lena hurriedly opened the boxes and was further stunned.
In the largest box, there was a dress in the same blue as Lena’s eyes. It was made from a luxurious, glossy fabric, clearly high-quality. Wondering if it was for the upcoming party, she opened the smaller boxes in turn — inside were shoes, a hair ornament, a set of earrings and a necklace, and gloves.
(Could it be for today’s party…?)
That seemed the only explanation. Still, it was astonishing to have everything delivered from head to toe all at once, leaving Lena speechless.
“You said it was from the Chancellor, right? So why is the Chancellor giving you a dress?”
“I’m supposed to be his partner at today’s party…”
“What?!”
It was her father who exclaimed loudly, then froze as if turned to stone.
Alex, looking exasperated, pressed his forehead.
“Big sister, you should properly report such important things. Our father is already a nervous wreck, and if he finds out like this, his heart might give out.”
“Now that you mention it, I forgot to tell him…”
Perhaps because she was still in shock and couldn’t believe it, Lena realized she had completely forgotten to tell her father until now.
In any case, to preserve her father’s peace of mind, Lena called Catherine to bring the boxes into her room, so the packages disappeared from view. As they did, her father, who had looked about to faint, gradually regained his composure.
“Lena, I hope I’m mistaken, but… are you really involved with the Chancellor?”
“What do you mean involved? Don’t jump to weird conclusions. This party is just a coincidence! Just a series of coincidences, or maybe Klaus-sama’s convenience… Anyway, there’s nothing going on between me and Klaus-sama!”
Since Klaus was an exalted figure, like from above the clouds, there was no way Lena and he could be anything more. Her father was probably just talking nonsense.
“Well, yeah, I suppose so.”
“Exactly.”
“You’re pretty ordinary, just like me. If only you looked more like your mother…”
“That’s none of your business!”
Alex, on the other hand, resembled their late mother more, with more refined features than Lena. But Lena seemed to have inherited more of the Cramorant family bloodline, and her features resembled her aunt Betty more than her father — a plain, average face with nothing particularly remarkable.
“I was surprised, but I guess it’s too late to refuse now. Just be careful not to embarrass yourself in front of the Chancellor. Don’t trip over your dress or spill drinks.”
“Father, I’m not a child anymore, you know?”
“You tend to mess up sometimes, so I worry…”
As her father said, Lena occasionally lost focus and became distracted, but she wouldn’t make a mistake serious enough to ruin the party.
“Father, you’re going with Aunt Betty today, right? I think she’ll want to dance, but are you okay? You’re a terrible dancer…”
“Ugh…”
Her father usually attended parties with some relative, but this time Betty, who wanted to go to the royal party, had insisted he come along. Invitations were only sent to the noble houses above the count level, so Betty, who married into the Esther Viscountess family, didn’t receive one.
“Be careful not to step on Aunt Betty’s feet. If you do even once, she’ll be furious.”
“I know. That’s why I didn’t want to go with you, but I have no choice…”
With a resigned sigh, her father looked down, and Lena clapped her hands with a small smile.
“Anyway, let’s think about tonight later. For now, breakfast! I’m starving!”
Despite her words, Lena secretly worried about whether she might do something embarrassing at the party today. To calm herself, she took a quiet deep breath.
