Chapter 01

I was reincarnated as an extra in a web novel.

It wasn’t a romance fantasy, not a martial arts story, not even a hunter story… anyway, it was a novel with no real foundation.

The plot went something like this:

The setting was modern society, but grotesque humanoid monsters appeared at random. People called them “Aberrants.”

And the overpowered protagonist worked for the White Killer Association, a group that basically played the role of school bullies—but for hunting Aberrants.

At school, however, he hid his identity and pretended to be weak.

‘Now that I think about it, it’s just an urban fantasy. Feels like a hunter story with different terminology.’

I called it “baseless” simply because I didn’t really like the modern fantasy genre.

That’s why it was such a shame to be reborn inside this novel—one where I didn’t even know the ending and barely remembered the details.

‘It was popular, so I read it, but I basically wasted 30,000 won.’

I enjoyed it fairly well up until around chapter 300, the middle-late part. I could see why it was popular.

But when I hit the genre’s limitations, I had to choose between “spend 10,000 more won to finish it” or “use that 10,000 won on another novel.” I chose the latter.

‘If I’d known I’d be reincarnated here, I would’ve just spent the extra 10,000 won. Ugh, so annoying.’

Anyway, I was reborn as the step-sister of the crazy mastermind villain in the web novel Not a Killer—the ridiculous title probably contributed to me thinking it lacked foundation—and that was now an irreversible reality.

“Say hello. This is the man Mom told you about—and his son.”

“……”

No matter what I tried over the past few years, I couldn’t stop Mom from dating.

“Hello. So you’re Seyeon. I’ve heard a lot about you. You saw me once before, right?”

“Yes, well….”

Thanks to that, I was about to gain an older brother with all sorts of flaws and disgraceful titles attached to him: sociopath, emotionally stunted, murderer.

So yes, I was in a very bad mood.

“Kim Seyeon….”

At my blunt attitude, Mom lightly jabbed my side. The atmosphere turned awkward.

Then the sociopath standing beside my soon-to-be stepfather smiled in a reliable manner and greeted my mom.

“She’s in middle school, right? That’s a sensitive age. I’m Seo Jinhyung. I’m seventeen. I hope we get along.”

“Oh my… you’re only a year older, and yet so mature.”

Mom blushed and lowered her guard, completely taken in by Seo Jinhyung’s upright exterior. It would’ve been strange to be hostile toward your future husband’s son, sure—but right now, everything irritated me.

“Let’s sit down. Seyeon, you must be hungry. I’ll order something delicious—”

“Hmph.”

Before he could finish, I stormed into the restaurant.

I heard Mom’s flustered voice behind me but pretended not to.

“She’s not usually like this….”

“Haha, it’s alright. Let’s go in.”

The inside of the restaurant was even more luxurious than the outside. A wide glass window showed off the glittering night view, and cultured-looking guests filled the place.

Sitting across from me were a father and son—the chairman of LS Construction, one of the top five construction companies in South Korea, and his only son.

I’d known that from the novel’s setting, but seeing it in person made their wealth feel real.

‘That crazy bastard Seo Jinhyung. He should’ve just quietly enjoyed his chaebol life.’

While I scowled and ruined the mood, the middle-aged couple and the handsome high schooler laughed and chatted as if I didn’t exist.

‘What’s so funny? And can you stop talking about your totally uninteresting first meeting?’

As I inwardly cursed through their fake family conversation, the food arrived.

Without even saying “thank you for the meal,” I started eating first. Completely rude behavior.

Mom looked like she wanted to kill me with her eyes.

“She must’ve been very hungry.”

In response to Seo Jinhyung’s attempt to smooth things over, I raised my middle finger at him.

“Kim Seyeon! You really—!”

Mom finally tried to stand up, but I was faster.

Bang!

I slammed my palm on the table and stood up, then spat the food in my mouth back onto the plate.

Chewed, mashed food spilled out in a disgusting heap.

Even the man who had maintained his poker face couldn’t hide his shock anymore.

“I hate it! I said I hate it!! I told you so many times I don’t want you to remarry!! And why do I have to suddenly live in the same house as men I’ve never even met before?! I don’t want to! Please!!”

All eyes in the restaurant turned to us. I didn’t care. If anything, it felt satisfying.

Tears streamed down my cheeks.

“Sniff… damn it.”

I wiped my eyes roughly with my sleeve and shouted my final words.

“Fine, get married!! I’ll move out and live on my own!!!”

Then I ran out of the restaurant without looking back.

Except it was a high-rise building, so I got stuck waiting in front of the elevator.

“Damn it, nothing ever works!”

After stomping in frustration, I eventually hid inside a stall in the nearby women’s restroom.

No matter how much I wiped my tears, they wouldn’t stop.

“Waaah….”

As I sat miserably on the toilet crying, the face of the man responsible for all this misfortune came to mind.

‘…Seo Jinhyung.’

That’s right. This was all because of Seo Jinhyung.

In Not a Killer, Seo Jinhyung was the hidden mastermind and main villain—very different from ordinary people.

You know those fictional sociopaths who act kind on the outside but are rotten inside? He was exactly that type.

The kind of villain who probably didn’t shed a single tear at birth.

‘A monster from birth.’

Well, based on some unsettling descriptions in the original story, there might’ve been environmental factors too… but anyway.

What mattered was that he lacked humanity and empathy—a psychopath bored with life.

And the one thing that truly interested him was the humanoid monsters called “Aberrants.”

More specifically, the murders they committed, the destruction of property, the chaos they caused.

But recently, the White Killer Association had been eliminating Aberrants so quickly that large-scale damage rarely happened anymore.

So what do you think a sociopath like him would do?

That’s when Seo Jinhyung, still in middle school, began planning the Association’s downfall.

At this point in time—seventeen years old—he hadn’t started killing yet. He was still in the preparation phase. But within a year, he would begin acting.

‘He’s basically a walking missile… and he’s planning to take down the White Killers alone while still a student.’

It sounded absurd. But it wasn’t entirely impossible.

The White Killers were nearly superhuman—but they didn’t actually have superpowers.

That was what differentiated Not a Killer from other novels. There were no supernatural abilities or magic like you’d typically see in modern fantasy.

They fought Aberrants by pushing the limits of human physical ability.

Of course, since it was still fiction, they could jump from the fifth floor without injury, spin three times midair for a kick, or shatter concrete with their bare fists.

Compared to my original world, their physical abilities were unrealistic.

Among them, the overpowered protagonist had strength nearly at superpower level for the sake of satisfying plot development. And to counter him, the mastermind Seo Jinhyung also possessed enough strength to easily defeat most White Killers without special training.

On top of that, he had the vast capital of a major corporation backing him, making staging situations and erasing evidence child’s play.

Thanks to that, his crimes flowed smoothly.

Until one day, his step-sister and stepmother accidentally witnessed part of a corpse at home.

Slash.

I dropped the novel right at that episode.

So I don’t know how Seo Jinhyung met his end.

The protagonist probably defeated him at the conclusion—but my mom and I would be dead long before that, so it didn’t matter.

‘…Does someone who’s destined to lose everything count as someone who has nothing to lose?’

If so, I had nothing left to lose.

Knock knock.

“……?”

Someone knocked on the stall door.

“Who is it?”

“Seyeon, are you okay? It’s Jinhyung oppa….”

Crazy bastard.

“Who gave you permission to call yourself oppa? And this is the women’s restroom, you pervert. Get the hell out. I’ll kill you. No, just die.”

As I spoke, my emotions flared and curses poured out unfiltered.

It felt refreshing. If I was going to die anyway, shouldn’t I at least give him a piece of my mind first?

“Ah, this is one of our affiliated buildings, so I probably won’t get arrested. Thanks for worrying.”

“Wow, must be nice. If it’s your building, you can just commit crimes freely, huh? Why not break down the stall and come inside while you’re at it?”

“Can I?”

His soft voice sent chills down my spine.

Seo Jinhyung was definitely a sociopathic future murderer—but he usually hid it perfectly in public.

Handsome face, wealthy family, good grades. Anyone would call him perfect. He even acted gentle and kind.

So in short, this attitude was strange.

‘What is this? A joke? No way. What kind of joke is this…?’

Suddenly, I was afraid he might actually kill me. Of course, he’d kill me eventually—but I meant right now.

“Go ahead.”

I tried to sound tough, but my voice trembled miserably. I heard a light chuckle outside.

“I’m joking. Auntie’s very worried. I’ll wait outside, so come out when you’ve calmed down.”

“……”

Damn it. I’d been played.

Exactly two months later.

“I won’t remarry.”

“What?!”

“But we’re merging households with him.”

“Damn it!!”

Mom suddenly dropped that bomb on me while I was lying on the living room floor like a corpse.

‘You’ve got to be kidding me.’

I sat up in frustration, then flopped back down onto the sofa. What was she thinking?

“Sit up. I’m serious.”

“I can hear you just fine lying down—agh!!”

After getting smacked for being cheeky, I teared up slightly and sat properly.

Mom sat beside me with an unusually serious expression.

“I’ve thought a lot since that day. I thought you were just saying things… I didn’t know you hated it enough to cry like that.”

…You thought I was just saying it? I’d been chanting “don’t remarry” like a mantra!

“Instead of forcing you to approve right away, let’s just live together for one year. If you still hate it after that, I won’t remarry.”

“Sure… whatever.”

Seo Jinhyung’s murder debut was in the fall of his second year of high school. My trip to the afterlife was scheduled for winter of my first year.

Either way, the ending was the same: living in the same house as him and dying.

Mom sighed at my indifferent response.

“I know it’s hard, especially at your age, to live with strangers—especially a boy your age.”

“……”

“But, Seyeon. Can you give Mom just one chance? Let’s try living together until then. If you really hate it, I’ll give up. Okay?”

I could give her as many chances as she wanted. If I was still alive by then.

‘From the looks of it, no matter how much I struggle, I’m doomed to die. It feels like divine revelation….’

I reluctantly nodded. Mom and I would both die soon anyway. I didn’t want to fight anymore.

‘What happens if you die twice? Reincarnate again? Or finally the afterlife?’

I didn’t know. I’d never died twice before.

Well, if I had to die again, I’d rather go to the afterlife than start another new life.

Maybe I could see Dad there.

Synopsis

I was reincarnated as Kim Se-yeon, the stepsister of a sociopathic serial killer.

Thankfully, it’s before our parents remarry—but stopping my mom from getting back together with his dad and avoiding moving in together both fail…
So I guess I’ll just have to survive!

Survival Project Phase 1: Turn the villain into a normal person.

By chance, I overhear Seo Jinhyung’s complicated family history.
If the reason he turned twisted is a lack of affection, then I’ll just fill that void myself.
I talk to him kindly (sort of), share late-night snacks together,
and secretly feel proud watching him grow closer to being human—

“Baby kangaroos must have it easy since they don’t have to walk. I’m jealous.”
“Do you want to be carried around like that too, Se-yeon? I can carry you everywhere.”

…Wait. That wasn’t part of the plan.
