<Chapter 25>
The dictation test held the next day was, as expected, no easy task.
In truth, Lucien hadn’t been able to focus on her studies the day before, too worried about Alfie. But that was just an excuse.
She honestly couldn’t recall whether certain words had silent letters in them or not, so she ended up guessing a few. Those were probably all wrong.
Now that she knew she wasn’t going to be adopted, she at least wanted to do well on the test. Lucien felt somewhat disheartened.
And then, a little later—
“Oh my goodness, Miss Lucien!”
Startled by the sudden screech(?) in the hallway, Lucien cracked the door open and peeked out, only to see Alfie excitedly standing there with both arms wide open.
“Amazing! You got a perfect score again today!”
“What?!”
That couldn’t be. There were several answers she’d written with no confidence whatsoever…!
“How can you be so smart? Hah… We should post this test paper on the wall for everyone to admire!”
“W-wait, that’s—!”
This was a problem. If he did that, exaggerated rumors would spread about her, and then…
‘…But I’m not being adopted anyway, so I guess it doesn’t matter?’
Perhaps because she didn’t stop him, Alfie actually went and posted the test paper right outside her door.
Not long after, Juliet saw it and gave Lucien a thumbs-up.
“Once again, your brilliance has been renewed.”
Up until now, Lucien had felt uncomfortable receiving Juliet’s compliments, but now, she didn’t have to feel that way anymore.
“Thank you, sis. I’ll try even harder from now on.”
Lucien was genuinely happy to accept her encouragement wholeheartedly.
“Oh, and Miss Lucien, a letter has arrived for you.”
“For me?”
“Yes, a love letter, you could say—a stepping stone to your future.”
Juliet handed her what she called a love letter, which turned out to be from Benedict, and Lucien couldn’t help but burst out laughing.
And in the letter…
“What does it say? Is there any mention of buying a ring in the capital?”
Juliet couldn’t wait any longer and asked quickly. Lucien calmly shook her head.
“The Duke didn’t go to buy the ring, but to receive it. He wrote that he got it safely. And…”
Lucien’s eyes moved quickly back and forth, following the neatly written letters on the page.
Finally, at the end of the letter, she smiled brightly and hugged the thin piece of paper tightly to her chest.
“Benedict is coming back soon!”
Right after she shouted this joyfully, Lucien suddenly realized she had carelessly called him by name and quickly shut her mouth.
How dare she call her master by name? Wouldn’t Juliet be offended?
Lucien hurried to apologize, but for some reason, Juliet was wearing an extremely proud expression.
‘She must be so happy about Benedict returning that she’s letting my slip-up slide.’
How generous she was! Truly the perfect candidate to be the head maid.
‘Someday, when this mansion has a mistress, I’ll make sure to tell her everything…’
Lucien made a firm resolution.
