We descended the mountain and returned to the Adventurers’ Guild around dusk.
“Good work. Did you manage the request without any problems?”
As soon as we entered the guild, Teodoro, who had been talking with Natasha about something, called out to us.
“Perfectly. Teodoro, it’s rare to see you here. How are the kids?”
I asked, recalling the little ones who would surround him every time we went to the church, saying, “Become a wolf!” and climbing all over him.
This couple takes care of several orphaned beast children at the church. The visiting sister goes home at night, so Teodoro usually has to look after the children himself. That’s why it was unusual for him to be at the guild after sunset.
“Today, it seems the sister will stay even at night… and Layla said she wanted to wait for you at the guild when you returned, so I stopped by. …I also wanted to talk a little with Stefan…”
In the middle of Teodoro’s words, a voice called out, “Welcome back!” and the sound of quick footsteps approaching us followed.
“How was work?”
Layla ran up, waving her hand.
“Just got back!” Stefan responded with a smile. I was a little surprised to see that expression.
Usually, Stefan has that polite, all-around friendly smile plastered on his face, but now he was smiling naturally. The only other time I remembered him laughing like this was with his own horse back at home.
“No problems. But how about you, Layla? Did Teodoro teach you a lot?”
“I learned various things… about healing magic and so on. But more importantly, how were the monsters?”
I remembered and slapped my hand together.
“Right, right! I have a souvenir for Layla. Lil, can you prepare the fire and pot in the backyard?”
Layla jumped up.
“Oh, a souvenir… What is it? Food?”
“You said when we first met that you wanted to eat a dragon egg, right? You can eat it—I brought some back.”
Proudly, I pointed to the bag held by the D-rank adventurer party standing behind us.
It was the serpent dragon eggs we had collected today.
Although we had collected more serpent dragon eggs than the request required, we were told to dispose of the extras—but eating them counts as proper disposal. We had gotten plenty today, so there was enough to eat.
“You’re not supposed to eat dragon eggs, though.”
“I said it’s fine if you have permission. These are okay to eat.”
“…So this is the souvenir, huh.”
Stefan gave me a grimace, almost as if his teeth hurt, and glared at me.
“It’s fine. They’re actually pretty tasty. …Though you never eat them yourself.”
“…I just can’t bring myself to eat monster eggs,” Stefan said quietly.
He always tells others to eat their vegetables, yet he himself refuses certain foods.
“Do you guys want some too? If you’re leaving soon, you might as well fill your stomach a bit first.”
I asked the D-rank party—a swordsman, healer, and martial artist. They had to deliver what we had collected to the Magician’s Guild in the royal capital afterward.
“Then… we’d love some,” the three of them said, glancing at each other.
“Let’s see… Now that you mention it, I feel a little peckish. …I’ll get it ready now,” Lil said, heading to the storage room to fetch a pot.
