Chapter 9
After the Explanation
âI know! I know thatâbut itâs really not like that!â
âIsnât it?â
Ain narrowed his eyes and tossed aside the nearly melted ice pack, crossing his arms as he complained.
âEven I, a commoner, know that noble proposals are 100% pre-arranged show events.â
âIâm telling you, itâs not like thatâŠâ
Now too tired to keep denying it, Serenia let out a long sigh.
âYesterday wasnât pre-arranged at all. I wasnât even informed. It was completely sudden! And I clearly rejected him!â
Only after hearing that she rejected it did Ainâs expression soften slightly.
Seizing the moment, she quickly added,
âMore importantly, itâs an insult to even call it a proposal. It looked like one, but in truthâit was humiliation.â
âHumiliationâŠ?â
Ain asked with a puzzled face.
Taking the chance, Serenia told him everything that happened yesterdayâ
Without hiding anything.
It wasnât a request for marriage, but an order.
She refused.
Then she was told to repay with her bodyâ
And in the endâ
She slapped Rascalo.
Ainâs expression hardened.
âYou⊠slapped the Duke?â
Noticing his stiff face, Serenia quickly corrected herself,
âWell⊠âslappedâ might be too much. I just⊠lightly hit him. Weaker than a clap.â
Then she added awkwardly,
âSo the Duke probably wonât sue the Bahishat family or take revenge⊠probably.â
ââŠHmm.â
Ain slowly spoke while rubbing his chin.
âSo all of this⊠is just the Duke mocking and insulting you on a whim?â
âYes! Thatâs right!â
Serenia nodded quickly.
But he tilted his head.
âThen something feels strange.â
ââŠWhat?â
He handed her the newspaper.
âThe company that published this is called âGossip in Shedron.ââ
âUh⊠yes. So?â
âItâs a small tabloid that covers everything from high society to entertainment.â
Sereniaâs expression stiffened.
A small tabloidâ
Could they really print and spread such a massive special edition across the entire capital overnight?
That didnât make sense.
Which meantâ
ââŠThey knew in advance?â
Ain looked at her with interest as she immediately understood.
âExactly. That means the Duke didnât propose on a whim.â
âB-But how did he know I would attend the banquetâŠ?â
Then she realized.
ââŠThe notice from the bank.â
For Rascalo, adjusting the bankâs deadline would be easy.
Which meantâ
All of this was planned.
âThen why?â
The question slipped out without her realizing.
Ain looked at her and answered calmly,
âObviouslyâto truly marry you.â
âThat canât beâŠâ
She tried to deny itâ
But then she thought back.
âNow that I think about it⊠he kept asking for my answer until the end.â
If it was only for humiliation, he wouldnât need an answer.
It sounded absurdâ
But everything fit perfectly.
If Rascaloâs goal was really to make her his wifeâ
Stillâ
ââŠWhy?â
Why would he want the daughter of the man he killed?
She couldnât understand.
Ain looked at her as if it was ridiculous.
âAre you asking me that?â
She froze at his tone.
He continued with a displeased expression,
âYou keep forgettingâbut I am your fiancĂ©.â
ââŠWhat?â
âItâs already enough to hear that another man approached my fiancĂ©e. And now youâre asking me why?â
Realizing her mistake, Serenia quickly spoke,
âWell⊠technically, that happened before I made the contract with you, so it wasnât your âfiancĂ©eâ at the timeââ
She stopped.
Ain was staring at her coldly.
âSo Iâm âyou,â but heâs âRascaloâ?â
Under his sharp gaze, she lowered her eyes.
âIâm sorry. I misspoke. Please forget it. From now on, Iâll call him âthat man.ââ
Even after her polite apology, he still looked dissatisfied.
After a moment, he spoke firmly,
âIn that case, I canât just let this pass.â
ââŠWhat?â
âLetâs delay the marriage registration until after December 8.â
ââŠWhat?!â
She couldnât say:
âThen what about my three million crobat?!â
She had no right to complain.
âWhat if that man sends poison any timeâŠ? What if I die before getting the moneyâŠ?â
Ain had no idea what she was thinking.
He continued,
âAnd during those seven days, letâs create some evidence.â
âEvidence?â
He smiled brightly.
âYes. Evidence of our relationship.â
âWhat kind? A couple ring?â
âNo. Something more certain.â
âMore⊠certain?â
Feeling uneasy, she frowned.
He smiled again.
âFirst, letâs go outside.â
A Little Later
In a small forest near the Bahishat estateâ
Two figures appeared between the bushes.
They had escaped through a secret underground passage.
They were disguised using wigs and clothes from the box Ain arrived in.
The menâs disguise made senseâ
But the womenâs wig and dress did not.
When she asked, he replied:
âIf there wasnât a secret passage, I was going to dress as a woman and leave.â
Serenia imagined itâ
Ain, taller than her, wearing a dress and long wig.
It should look ridiculousâ
But somehow, it suited him perfectly in her imagination.
For some reason, she felt like she lost.
While she frownedâ
He stopped a carriage.
After about 30 minutes, they arrived at a large building.
As she stepped down with his escortâ
She saw the sign.
< Neriad Hotel >
She froze.
âW-What are you trying to do?!â
âExcuse me?â
âY-You pervert!!â
Ain looked stunned.
âWhat exactly are you thinking?â
ââŠWhat?â
He sighed.
âMy job may cause misunderstandings, but Iâm not that kind of person.â
âTh-Then why are we hereâŠ?â
âThe restaurant here has a great view, strong security, and the owner knows many good photographers.â
Only then did she realize.
âAh⊠so the âevidenceâ is photos?â
âYes. More preciselyâphotos secretly taken over two years by a persistent reporter following our dates.â
She tilted her head.
âWhy add the âsecretly takenâ part?â
He winked.
âBecause evidence from a third party is more believable than something provided by the people involved.â
Ah⊠that made sense.
Serenia nodded without doubt.
He smiled meaningfullyâ
And led her into the hotel restaurant.
