Chapter 6
After the Contract
ââŠWhat?â
âI mean, letâs say that, publicly, you were the one who fell for me first.â
âW-What did you just say?â
âTo explain it more clearlyâyou fell deeply in love with me and chased after me passionately. And I, moved by your sincerity, accepted you.â
ââŠâŠâ
Serenia froze completely like a statue.
Seeing her reaction, he frowned slightly.
âWell, if you donât like it, then forget it.â
He raised his hand as if he was about to tear the contract.
Startled, Serenia quickly waved her hands.
âAh! No, no!â
After struggling internally for a while, she finally nodded with great reluctance.
â…Alright. Letâs do that. Iâll be the one who chased after you.â
âGood. Then itâs a promise.â
He immediately picked up the pen and signed under <Party B>.
Serenia looked at the signature.
ââŠWhat is this?â
âItâs my signature.â
He pointed proudly at what he had written.
But to Serenia, it looked like a strange creatureâsomething between a starfish and a worm.
She stared at it, frowning deeply.
She couldnât read a single letter properly.
âIs it⊠A⊠no, E⊠or OâŠ?â
ââŠIan?â
ââŠâŠâ
Just by looking at his cold expression, she knew she was wrong.
âThat brings back memories.â
His voice was soft, but somehow every word felt heavy.
âIn the past, many people mistook my name for that.â
âI⊠seeâŠâ
âWell, itâs understandable. The spelling can be confusing. And honestly, Ian is a more common name.â
ââŠYes, thatâs true.â
âI think Iâve given you enough hints.â
Under his expectant gaze, Serenia forced a smile.
ââŠAin?â
He smiled brightly.
âCorrect.â
Then he added cheerfully,
âIâll make sure you never forget it again.â
ââŠWhat?â
Before she could stop him, he raised his hand.
Thenâ
âAingâĄ.â
He poked his cheek with his finger and made a cute, playful sound.
Serenia barely managed to hold back the urge to punch him.
He continued smiling innocently.
âHow is it? You wonât forget now, right?â
Through clenched teeth, she replied,
ââŠYes.â
While she was grinding her teeth, he neatly organized the contract and placed the copies into two envelopes.
Seeing this, Sereniaâs eyes widened.
âWhat are you doing?â
âIâm organizing the contract.â
âI know that! Thatâs not what I meant!â
âThen what is it?â
âYou didnât tell me your full name yet!â
âI just did.â
âNo! Not that starfish-looking thing! The worm-looking part too!â
ââŠWorm?â
âYour surname! Your surname!â
Ain looked at her as if she were strange.
âThat will disappear once weâre married. Why do you need to know it?â
ââŠWhat?â
Still confused, she accepted the envelope he handed her.
âWell then, since weâre doneâand itâs lateâyou should get going.â
âAh⊠okayâŠâ
Before she realized it, she had taken his hand and stood up.
And before she knew itâ
She was already outside.
Instead of her old carriage, a luxurious four-horse carriage stood in front of the mansion.
Her mouth fell open.
After helping her inside, he didnât step backâ
He got in with her.
The door closed, and the carriage began moving.
Inside the brightly lit carriage, Serenia looked at him sitting across from her.
âWhat are you doing now?â
He smiled.
âAs your fiancĂ©, I canât send you home alone this late at night.â
She scoffed.
âOh? But itâs fine for a fiancĂ© to only tell half his name?â
He replied calmly,
âYouâre mistaken. I didnât not tell youâyou simply forgot.â
Serenia clenched her fists under her sleeves.
She really wanted to hit that smug face.
âIn any case, I donât want to pay six million crobat, so Iâll fulfill my duties as your fiancĂ©.â
He casually put on a wide-brim hat and blocked the window with his body.
Serenia found it strange but didnât think much of it.
She didnât notice the theater poster outside the windowâ
The one with his full name written clearly on it.
* * *
The large carriage moved smoothly over the snowy road.
Money really is powerful.
They arrived at the Bahishat estate in no time.
Ain stepped out first and politely held out his hand.
âThe ground is slippery because of the snow. Please hold my hand, my lady.â
It was a perfect gestureâ
But it annoyed her even more.
âWow, thank you so much, Mr. Ain-whatever.â
He smiled.
âYou hold grudges longer than I expected.â
âI donât want to hear that from someone who took payment and still only told me half his name, Mr. Ain-whatever.â
âHow harsh. I properly introduced myself, yet you forgot everything.â
She glared at him.
Of course, he only smiled back.
After a moment, she changed the topic.
âSo, where should we meet tomorrow morning? Mr. Ain-whatever.â
His expression suddenly stiffened.
âTomorrow morningâŠ?â
âYes. We should go early so the government office isnât crowded.â
âThe office? WhyâŠ?â
She answered as if it were obvious.
âTo register the marriage, of course.â
His eyes widened behind the purple glasses.
âRight away? Without an engagement ceremony or wedding?â
She shrugged.
âIs that a problem?â
âNo⊠not really, but stillâŠâ
âIf itâs not a problem, then letâs do it.â
Then she added bluntly,
âI need the money.â
In truth, she wasnât in that much of a hurryâ
But she didnât know when Rascalo might come for her life.
She needed the money as soon as possible.
Before she died.
That way, she could pay for her fatherâs hospital bills for decadesâ
And clear her debt.
Not knowing her true thoughts, Ain looked at the empty, lifeless estate and nodded in understanding.
Serenia almost got annoyed at his pitying gaze, but held it back.
Instead, she offered something in return.
âAfter I get the three million crobat, Iâll do whatever you want. Engagement ceremony, weddingâanything.â
If Iâm still alive by then.
She kept those final words to herself.
