Chaptar 4
We finished our meal while asking each other questions. After dinner, Raiden escorted me back to my room.
âYou didnât have to come all the wayâŠâ
âYou are my precious fiancĂ©e, after all.â
Raiden said with a smile. The atmosphere was warm and pleasant, yet there was still a lingering tension between us.
We soon arrived in front of my door.
âThank you.â
âI believe I can help with choosing your personal maid.â
âRaiden?â
âI prepared the list of candidates.â
âWhy go that farâŠ?â
âSince Celia is coming, I thought I should at least put in that much effort.â
His eyes looked as if he was expecting praise, so I smiled at him.
I wasnât sure what he wanted, but for now, praising him seemed right.
With a gentle smile, I leaned in slightly and whispered,
âYou did well.â
âYes, hearing that from you makes it worthwhile.â
What is this⊠why does he only say such nice things?
And just like that, I ended up choosing a maid together with him.
Inside the room, Raiden and I sat facing each other on the sofa. After a while, the butler, Luten, entered.
âThese are the candidates for the maid position.â
I looked at the list. As expected, Elise was on it.
âElise seemed quite capableâŠâ
At my words, Raiden pointed to the list.
âElise is skilled enough to occasionally attend to me. When important guests visit, she serves them as well.â
She really was good.
âActually, I had already planned to assign Elise. Thatâs why I sent her to assist you beforehand. But I thought you might prefer someone else, so I showed you the list.â
After hearing that, I thought for a moment and pointed at other names.
âWhat about the others?â
Raiden shook his head.
âTheyâre not as good as Elise. Honestly, I recommend her.â
So even yesterday, when she briefly assisted me, he had already assigned me the most skilled maid.
âIâll choose Elise.â
I told the butler without hesitation.
âThen, Lady Celia, I will send Elise to you right away.â
âPlease do.â
The butler bowed and left.
I was starting to feel tired.
As I was thinking that, Raiden stood up.
âYou must be tired after arriving today. Please rest.â
Heâs quick to notice.
âWould you like to have tea together tomorrow?â
But I couldnât just let him go like that.
âTea⊠together?â
His eyes wavered again as he looked at me.
âYes. Iâd like to get to know you better, Raiden.â
In the dream, I had treated him coldly, so even though we were engaged, I never really got to know him.
I needed to change that.
âAnd Iâd like to have chocolate chip cookies too.â
âIt sounds like it will be a delightful time. I will make sure to be free tomorrow at noon.â
He said with a softened gaze, clearly pleased by my suggestion.
Raiden bowed and turned to leave, but before closing the door, he glanced back at me with a hint of reluctance.
After he left, I went to bed with Eliseâs help.
I think this is going wellâŠ
Raiden probably thought my words about getting along were just politeness. Still, he didnât reject me and listened to me. He seemed more apologetic than I expected⊠and he liked me.
And the way he speaks as if heâs seen me before⊠it must just be because of the newspapers.
I let out a small laugh and closed my eyes.
For now, I just needed to make tomorrowâs tea time go well.
Thinking about tomorrow, I drifted off to sleep.
Since this was a place I had seen countless times in my dreams, it felt familiar.
I fell asleep quickly.
Tea time was held in my room.
Before he arrived, I placed fruits Raiden liked and cookies I liked on the table and brewed the tea.
Iâm good at brewing tea. Even the Crown Prince acknowledged my skill. So I decided to let Raiden taste tea brewed by me personally.
Hopefully, this could help me get closer to him.
âElise.â
âYes, miss.â
âBring two teacups.â
Elise quickly returned with teacups decorated with adorable cats.
As I admired them, someone knocked on the door.
âWho is it?â
âCelia, itâs me.â
A familiar voice.
Elise opened the door, and Raiden entered.
âWelcome.â
I waved at him. Elise bowed and quietly left the room.
Raiden was dressed neatly, wearing a luxurious white shirt beneath an embroidered outfit.
It was quite formal for a simple tea time.
âPlease, sit here.â
As I offered him a seat, he carefully sat down.
âI brewed the tea myself.â
âYou did?â
âI wanted this to be a special tea time.â
I poured tea from the elegant teapot.
âThis is Mongle tea.â
Mongle tea was commonly enjoyed in spring, even by commoners. He probably didnât expect a dukeâs daughter to drink something like that.
âItâs one of my favorite teas.â
âI like it too. Does that mean weâre alike?â
That wasnât what I expected him to say.
âI was just joking. Please donât be so surprised.â
He said, watching my reaction.
Was Raiden always like this?
Then again, in the dream, we werenât close, so itâs natural I didnât know this side of him.
He took a sip of teaâand his eyes widened.
Looking between the cup and me, he spoke with admiration.
âItâs sweet.â
âReally?â
âYes. It has more depth than the tea the maids prepare. The sweetness⊠it reminds me of your voice, Celia.â
He smiled as he drank.
What does that even mean
Still, I took a sip myself.
It really was good.
âI think I brewed it well.â
âIâm good at making tea. Whenever I had tea time with Princess Shiran, I was always in charge of the tea.â
The Roel family was a ducal house. Since childhood, I had often visited the imperial palace, so I knew Princess Shiran and Crown Prince Majin well.
âEven His Highness the Crown Prince likes my tea.â
Raiden drank moreâat first savoring it, then almost gulping it down.
âItâs so good I feel like praising it endlessly.â
âReally?â
As expected of my skills.
âBut Princess Shiran and Crown Prince Majin⊠theyâre not people I could ever meet.â
Raiden said with a bitter smile.
âThatâs not a good thing to say.â
I smiled gently at him.
âIâm engaged to you. If you lower yourself like that, how do you think I feel as your fiancĂ©e? You donât need to put yourself down just because of status.â
He lifted his head, looking at me with a fragile, searching gaze.
I nodded lightly.
He seemed pleased, tapping his teacup before speaking carefully.
âHow close are you to the Crown Prince?â
âWeâre somewhat acquainted.â
âBut people say you might become the Crown PrincessâŠâ
âDoes that bother you?â
âAs your fiancé⊠I feel quite jealous.â
That caught me off guard.
I laughed softly and shook my head.
âItâs just a rumor. Probably because of the first dance.â
âIâm not interested in becoming Crown Princess. Itâs a heavy position.â
Knowing my fate, survival was all that mattered.
I took a bite of a cookie and smiled.
âThese cookies are good. The chef must be skilled.â
âI made sure they were perfect. Since you like them, I insisted they had to be done well.â
âWas that necessary?â
âItâs our first tea time. The cookies must be perfect.â
His words made me smile, and he smiled back.
Did I really leave such a good first impression?
âDonât you like cake, Celia?â
âI do.â
I recalled something from the palace.
âWhen I visited, Princess Shiran always gave me cake. The strawberry cake was the best.â
âAt home?â
âI donât eat it often.â
Things had changed⊠after our decline.
Raiden seemed to understand.
Not wanting the mood to turn awkward, I continued,
âWe used to have small cake parties at the palace. Princess Shiran and the Crown Prince would come, and weâd enjoy them together.â
âJust the three of you?â
âYes, we usually spent time together.â
And there was one more person who would greet me there.
Olize Jin Cardiel Susian.
The beautiful youngest imperial princessâ
The one who would one day be with Raiden.
