Chapter 8: I Received a Job 4

When I went into the drawing room, my father indeed wore a pale face, as if he could collapse at any moment.

The envoy sitting opposite my father looked kind, but knowing that the Ice Chancellor stood behind him, I couldn’t help feeling tense.

(What could His Excellency Klaus’s envoy want with me…?)

I hadn’t seen Klaus since a party six years ago. Klaus was famous for rarely appearing at such gatherings and almost never attended anything outside of those held at the castle. It was rumored that six years ago he was at a viscount’s party in place of my elder brother, George III. The Orcock Viscount family are distant relatives of the wife of George III, and because of that connection George III and his wife were supposed to attend that day, but apparently the wife fell ill and Klaus had to go in his place.

At such a time six years ago, there’s no way a noble like Klaus would remember a woman he had scarcely interacted with, even briefly.

Lena sat down in confusion, and the envoy smile politely.K

“Sorry for the sudden visit. In fact, His Excellency the Chancellor would like to have a word with the young lady in private.”

“A consultation…?”

I was more confused than ever.

“Um, that is… is my daughter causing any trouble…?”

My father, trembling, asked the envoy, who shook his head exaggeratedly.

“No, no, not at all. By ‘consultation,’ you mean that the Chancellor would like to meet the young lady?”

“Huh?!”

Even I let out a strange cry in astonishment.

“The Chancellor would like to meet your daughter!?”

My father widened his eyes and gaped.

“Th-this may sound blunt, but our daughter is an ordinary, yes, a girl with a face that could be anywhere! To be the Chancellor’s companion is… impossible…!”

(That’s true enough, but it’s rude!)

Could it be too much to expect that a father would praise his own daughter? The parent’s bias, they say. A little praise would be nice.

Seeing my father waving his arms frantically, trying to refuse, the envoy wore a troubled look.

“Please calm down. The Chancellor isn’t looking for a playmate or anything like that…”

“Yes, yes, that’s right! I’m glad to hear it…”

Obviously relieved, my father wiped the sweat from his brow.

“Then, just what does the Chancellor want to talk about…?”

“Well, the Chancellor went to the museum recently, and when he saw your daughter’s painting, he said he would very much like to meet her.”

“Your daughter’s painting? Oh, that thing she drew for fun.”

(That’s not just a hobby!)

Lena, who had loved painting since she was little and had diligently studied it on her own, knew that her father had always treated it as a mere pastime.

“According to my daughter, it barely scraped into the bottom of the prize list, and was displayed at the museum for about a month.”

(Watch your wording, Father!)

“True, it wasn’t the grand prize, but it did come with a prize money. I would like a little praise, at least.”

“Well, if a painting is needed, I can offer it, but—”

(Don’t give it away without asking!)

Instead of my father, I glared at him, and noticing my gaze, he hurriedly added:

“If possible, perhaps you could buy it…”

(No! It’s not about money!)

We had a rare chance to meet Klaus, so why waste it over money?

(That icy, cold beauty of his is a chance to see up close!)

But my father, it seemed, was determined to present me to Klaus, worried I might misstep.

As I glared at my father, the envoy gave a wry smile and continued:

“The Lord Chancellor would very much like to speak with the young lady about the painting. If possible, he would like to come again tomorrow to fetch her.”

“That would be…”

“Understood!”

Before my father could say any more, I spoke up a little louder to interrupt him.

“Please, we would be honored to come.”

Nearby, my father covered his face with both hands and let out an “Ah…”
