(That said, I’m not very skillful, after all…)
Although I learned music and embroidery as hobbies, my skills are only below average at best, so there’s nothing to boast about.
I also have some education and basic cultural knowledge, but I’m not smart enough to teach others.
(I’m in trouble…)
Considering job opportunities for noblewomen, the options are limited to being a private tutor or a maid in someone’s household. However, as mentioned earlier, my academic skills are lacking, and being neither dexterous nor talented, both being a tutor or a maid would be too difficult for Lena.
Why are there so few job opportunities for noblewomen…?
Lena trudges through the castle town, sighing deeply.
She’s walking around the town looking for a job, but the only vacancy she found was for a girl to work at a bakery. If a noble daughter like her applies for a bakery girl position, it would cause a lot of trouble for the shop owner.
Is there any kind of work available that doesn’t require social status?
Aunt Betty is against Lena working, and her father, who heard from Betty, shares the same opinion. Therefore, the two of them are not helping her in her job search.
Ugh! Maybe I should just go to the art museum for a change of pace!
Since wandering around isn’t helping find a job, Lena decides to head to the art museum.
Lena has loved drawing since she was young, and she also enjoys viewing paintings. This museum displays artworks not only from established artists but also features works by young creators on a monthly basis, so she can enjoy visiting anytime.
She climbs the stone stairs and passes through the arched entrance, where the interior feels a bit cool. Light streams in through windows high above, illuminating the red carpet with a soft glow.
After paying the entrance fee at the reception, Lena leisurely looks at the paintings. The works by young artists are displayed near the exit, so she first enjoys the masterpieces of the great masters she’s seen many times. No matter how many times she looks, she always feels something profound—a testament to their greatness.
(Art supplies are quite expensive, so lately I’ve only been using charcoal…)
The paints, canvases, and other art materials at the Count Morlan’s estate are not the kind of things you can buy freely. Usually, Lena only receives money for art supplies and canvases once a year, on her birthday. This year, she’s contemplating what to do about that. She feels it might be better to save the birthday money for when she eventually leaves home.
(But I already have a painting in mind that I want to create…)
Since last year, she’s been thinking carefully about a particular painting she wants to do. She crosses her arms and lets out a deep sigh.
Should she ask for art supplies and canvases as a gift, or keep the money herself?
Besides her father, Betty also gives her presents, but in her case, it’s always a dress every year, and she knows it’s pointless to ask for anything else.
As she slowly looks around the museum and reaches the exhibit of young artists near the exit, Lena notices a poster on the wall.
“What could that be…?”
She approaches casually, wondering if it’s about next month’s exhibition, but it’s actually a call for art submissions.
“What’s this… a call for new artists? A contest? …An exhibition with prize money?!”
The poster announced a contest to select works for display here next month. It also mentioned that winners would receive prize money.
The moment she read that, a sudden insight struck Lena’s mind.
This is it!
Tutors and maids are out of the question. Then, she should debut as a painter.
Once she decided, she thought, I need to borrow some money from my father to buy a birthday gift!
The deadline for submitting her artwork is two weeks away. If she works quickly, she can finish in time.
Lena immediately writes her name on the contest entry form at the exit and happily hums a tune as she heads home.
