After finishing breakfast and a while later, Aunt Betty arrived.
Betty has the same reddish-blonde hair and blue eyes as Lena. My mother had stunning golden hair, but it seems Lena has inherited a strong bloodline from the Cramoran count family.
“Lena, I have a very nice story to tell you today,” Aunt Betty said cheerfully as she was shown into the sitting room.
However, Lena, who had already heard the situation from her father, felt gloomy and looked at the bundle of papers Aunt Betty was holding carefully—likely some kind of correspondence.
(I wonder how many letters she brought. Aunt Betty is oddly well-connected…)
Betty is weak for Alex, so when she refused an arranged marriage, she was angry. I told my brother to stay close because of that, but as soon as he received some sweets as a gift, the unfeeling little brother disappeared into the dining room. Now, he’s probably opening the wrapper and enjoying them alone. The growing twelve-year-old brother seems to find just three meals a day insufficient to satisfy his hunger.
Betty looked as if she was about to hum a tune as she laid out the correspondence on the coffee table.
“Today, I brought a marriage proposal for you. Choose whichever you like. Starting from the right—the heir to Lord Dalmor’s estate, then Viscount Arthur’s heir, and the next one…”
“Auntie,” Lena interrupted, sensing she was about to be pushed into a decision, feeling the momentum of Aunt Betty’s words.
“I’m sorry, Auntie. I think it’s a wonderful story, but I don’t plan to get married.”
“What are you saying?!”
“I’m sorry. I’ve been through a lot… yes, I’ve learned my lesson.”
“Learnt your lesson? That was six years ago! You really should forget the past and look ahead. All the men on the proposals today are wonderful, you know?”
“Even if they’re nice, I can’t do it… And Auntie, the heir to Viscount Arthur’s estate is the same age as Alex—twelve. That’s just impossible.”
“Oh, about ten years’ difference isn’t unusual.”
That applies when the man is older, but when the woman is older, it’s usually just two or three years at most. Of course, there might be exceptions, but Lena simply cannot marry a child the same age as her brother.
“Anyway, I want you to forget about this proposal.”
“Lena…”
Betty sighed dramatically and faced Lena with a serious expression.
“Listen, Lena. Even if you dislike it, this is one thing you can’t refuse. Alex is only twelve now, and you may not have thought about this, but just think about it carefully—what will you do when Alex inherits this house? If you keep hanging around, it will trouble Alex. Do you want to be a burden to your little brother?”
“That’s…”
Lena was struck by realization.
That’s right. Alex will someday become the head of the Cramoran family and will probably marry. Lena can’t stay attached to him forever. At least, when Alex inherits the family estate, Lena will have to leave this house.
(I hadn’t thought about that…)
Alex is only twelve, but Lena needs to prepare for that future.
“Well then, Auntie…”
“Do you understand? That’s good. Now, as for the rest—”
“I’m going to find a job.”
“Yes, yes, the next one is Count Barberry… Wait, what did you say?!”
Betty exclaimed, but Lena, with her mouth agape, looked seriously at her aunt and repeated:
“I’m going to find a job.”
I can’t go on like this. I need to learn a trade so I can support myself.
“Thank you, Auntie. If you hadn’t told me, I think I’d have just been lazing around forever!”
Lena tightly grasped Betty’s hand, but her aunt, overwhelmed by the shock, didn’t move a muscle.
