Chapter 04
“Ha, how could this be!”
After Lia and the Emperor disappeared, one noble young lady—who had stayed silent until then—finally burst out in anger.
The Emperor’s attitude toward the Empress changing was one thing.
But even so, how could his attitude toward Freya—whom he had cherished the most until before he collapsed—change like that?
This could only mean one thing.
That woman, the Empress, must have used some kind of trick.
“I’m fine.”
Freya spoke with a forced smile, feeling a sharp pain in her heart as the Emperor ignored her.
“But Lady Freya!”
Isn’t this far too much? Both the Emperor and that Empress.
The noble young lady voiced her resentment with an angry expression.
“Who His Majesty likes is not something I have the right to interfere with.”
Freya said bitterly.
“Lady Freya, you’re too kind.”
That’s why that Empress is acting so shamelessly, not even knowing the favor Lady Freya has shown her.
Originally, she should have been driven out to live in the separate palace, but thanks to Lady Freya’s kindness, she was allowed to stay in the main palace.
And now, just because the Emperor showed her a little favor, she was acting so arrogant.
In truth, Lia was not acting arrogant—she was simply showing her original personality without restraint. But that was something the noble ladies did not know.
“I really am fine.”
“You don’t need to feel so heartbroken. His Majesty will soon realize that woman’s true nature and return to you.”
The noble young lady spoke as if to comfort her.
“You think so?”
Freya asked, looking uneasy, her expression sad.
“Of course. Other than the fact that she was born a duke’s daughter, what does she have that’s better than you, Lady Freya?”
Though the Empress was indeed beautiful, Freya was no less so. And when it came to personality, the Empress could not even be compared to Freya.
Of course, the Empress’s personality today was a little different from before.
“Thank you for saying that. Still, she is Her Majesty the Empress, so I don’t think saying things like that is right. I understand why you said it, but I’m worried something bad might happen to you because of me.”
“How can Lady Freya be so kind-hearted?”
The Emperor had called the Empress kind and said strange things, but the truly kind one was Freya.
Just look—she was worried that Freya herself might feel bad about the words spoken and spoke carefully.
“I’m tired today, so I think I’ll go back and rest.”
“I understand. If it were me, I’d be worried sick too.”
The one who had been hurt the most by the Emperor’s changed attitude was surely Freya.
Freya apologized with a face that looked truly sorry, and the noble young lady smiled as if to say it was all right.
After parting with the noble young lady and returning to her room, Freya clenched her fist tightly.
She could not believe it—
Even after seeing the Emperor’s attitude with her own eyes.
After the Emperor collapsed and regained consciousness, his attitude had changed, but she never thought it would last.
She thought he would come to his senses soon and return to her.
She had told the noble young lady that she was fine, but her true feelings were not.
She felt bitter—
That the Emperor’s affection she had possessed was taken away.
But surely, he would return to her.
Because the woman he loved was her.
