Chapter — 14
Creating a good environment for fruit to grow turned out to be harder than expected.
Weather was something humans couldnât control, but many other parts of the environment could be managed.
Of course, that didnât guarantee a rich harvest for the year. Still, even creating a basic, stable environment made a huge difference.
âArenât tomato flowers really pretty? That bright yellow color,â Rosebell said.
âWhy are you here instead of helping pick the apple blossoms?â Aren asked.
âIf I keep going back and forth, youâll just get nervous and wonât be able to work properly. Besides, things are moving faster than I expected.â
âThatâs true. You really canât ignore people with experience.â
Rosebell laughed at Arenâs words. In Korea, things like this would have depended on a companyâs reputation, but farming was completely different from business.
âThatâs right. If you ignore experienced people, youâll regret it. There are more capable workers than you think.â
âSo are you just going to manage the garden like this?â Aren asked.
âNo. You and I have other things to do.â
As Rosebell smiled meaningfully, Aren instinctively took a step back.
He didnât know what she was planning, but past experience told him it would definitely be exhausting.
ââŠThis sounds suspicious.â
âWhat? Suspicious?â
As time passed, Rosebell felt like she was becoming more childish. Maybe it was because of Aren, or maybe because of her young body.
She thought, I need to get a grip, but her reactions to Aren still came out naturally.
âNo.â
âHuh?â
âEveryoneâs picking flowers by hand right now. That means even healthy flowers can get damaged.â
âHuman hands arenât very sharp, after all.â
âExactly! Thatâs why Iâm ordering a large batch of garden shears!â
ââŠFor the orchard?â
Aren looked completely confused. While scissors and knives were common tools in daily life, garden shears were a different matter.
If everyone had small shears, thinning the flowers would be much faster. They could also be reused later during the apple harvest, making everything more efficient.
âI have scissors for cutting cloth or paper, but not small garden shears.â
âDo we really need special ones?â
âNo, not necessarily. There are flower-arranging scissors, but those are more decorative than practical.â
Aren found it strange how obsessed Rosebell was with efficiency. Werenât nobles usually more focused on appearances than usefulness?
Once again, he realized she was an extraordinary woman in many ways.
Duke Efrian had been deliberately avoiding Rosebell since she woke up.
Of course, his daughter noticed.
Still, he didnât know where to begin explaining things. Maybe it was better to pretend nothing was wrong. After all, Rosebell didnât seem very interested in her mother.
âIâve never heard that spirit contracts are inheritedâŠâ he muttered.
What troubled Duke Efrian most was Rosebellâs last transformation. He had tried his best to protect this place.
That had been the start of all the misfortune.
âAriel⊠I still donât know how to explain this to RosebellâŠâ
His sorrowful voice was enough to make anyoneâs heart ache.
Knock, knock.
âFather, may I come in?â
Duke Efrian snapped back to his senses. He had planned to talk to her himself, but he hadnât expected her to come first.
âYes.â
When the office door opened, the duke froze. Rosebell was neatly dressedâunlike her usual appearance.
âWhere are you going?â he asked.
âTo the square.â
âThe square⊠why?â
âI need to order shears for the orchard. And Iâd like to take a short break while Iâm out. Is that okay?â
Saying âIâm going out to have funâ felt awkward. She had been buried in orchard and garden work for so long.
âAre you going with Maria?â
âNo. Iâm taking Aren today.â
âAren?â
âI need someone to block me if I throw a punch.â
The duke felt like heâd been hit on the head.
ââŠSince when do you throw punches?â
âTo be precise, I elbowed the leader of the group that was harassing Aren.â
The duke let out a hollow laugh at her casual explanation.
âI thought youâd grown up, but youâre still young.â
At the word young, Rosebell realized she really was acting childish.
âI am still young. So please stay healthy for a long time.â
âAlright. Iâll do my best to stay healthy. If youâre going to the square, should I give you some pocket money?â
Rosebellâs eyes widened. She blinked rapidly, then smiled brightly.
âIâm still young, so I have lots of things to buy with my fatherâs allowance!â
âSo⊠you do need it?â
At the dukeâs firm tone, Rosebell pouted.
âTch.â
If she charged everything to the dukeâs name, the bill would come to the mansion anyway. Still, he found it adorable that his daughter asked for pocket money.
âWhile youâre out, how about buying some clothes too?â
âFor Aren?â
âShe keeps wearing floral bodysuits⊠well, itâs sad to only wear pants all the time.â
ââŠAh.â
Even from the dukeâs point of view, Arenâs flower-patterned elastic pants were hard on the eyes.
Even if she came to work, it bothered him that her ankles were always exposed.
âFather? You sound like you agree with me.â
âAhem.â
Rosebell felt betrayed when the duke coughed and looked away.
âFather!â
âAren has grown a lot, hasnât she? Just buy her clothes that are comfortable to move in.â
âYou said those clothes were weird! Theyâre super comfortable! Even the orchard workers say so!â
Rosebell argued, but the duke only smiled awkwardly.
He was in a position where he didnât need to insist.
Meanwhile, Rosebell made sure to protect her fatherâs dignity as duke.
Rosebell felt suffocated by the whole situation.
Maria, on the other hand, was excited. It had been a long time since sheâd seen Rosebell choose proper clothes.
âItâs been so long since you wore normal clothes! Iâm so touched!â
Rosebell was slightly hurt by how directly Maria called her old clothes strange. But it seemed everyone felt the same way.
âJust wait. When summer comes, Iâll make you even more gorgeousâwith thin bodysuits and wide-brimmed floral hats!â
She was becoming increasingly serious about tormenting everyone under the excuse of efficiency.
âWhere are you going? The palace or something?â Aren asked.
âWhat were you doing just now?â
âWhy are you suddenly so noisy?â
Aren froze at Rosebellâs elegant appearance. She had always been pretty, but now she was completely dazzling.
She really looks like sheâs going to the palaceâŠ
âWhy would I go to the palace? I canât even breathe in this corsetâand youâre worried Iâll scratch my butt?â
âI didnât do anything!â
Uncomfortable clothes made people irritable.
âI know. These clothes are just too uncomfortable. Letâs go.â
âMe too?â
âYeah. Todayâs our outing day. Change and come out.â
âI need to wash first.â
ââŠWash quickly. Ten minutes.â
Aren decided there was no point arguing in such a ridiculous situation.
Seeing Rosebell properly dressed for the first time felt strange to Aren.
âWhy are you staring at me like that?â
âIt just feels⊠unfamiliar.â
âEverything feels unfamiliar. These clothes are uncomfortable. I canât breathe.â
âThe elastic pants are comfortable. Iâm not used to pants with hooks anymore.â
Rosebell burst out laughing at Arenâs serious tone, even though her chest felt tight.
Her ribs felt like they might break, but it was comforting to know she wasnât alone.
âAre you really that uncomfortable?â
âI grew taller and gained weight⊠It feels like Iâm bursting out of my clothes.â
âHahaha! Stop it! My ribs are really going to break!â
âI wasnât trying to be funny. Iâm serious.â
Aren nervously adjusted his shirt buttons, worried they might pop off at any moment.
So this is how Rosebell feelsâŠ
âLetâs buy new clothes and eat something good. Today is for relaxing. As long as my ribs survive.â
Her expression quickly darkened. Aren wondered if it would be better for her to give up the corset entirely.
Of course, that was easy for him to thinkâhe wasnât a noble, and he wasnât a woman.
âBut did you let your hair down on purpose?â
âMariaâs idea. If it were up to me, Iâd tie it all back.â
Her hair shimmered in the sunlight streaming through the carriage window.
Aren thought sheâd look better with her hair tied upâjust like she said.
