Chapter 35
âAre you crying?â
He turned his head away sharply, but our eyes metâhis eyes were red again.
âN-no, Iâm not.â
Worried, I reached out and brushed away the hand covering his face to see it properlyâbut he suddenly grabbed my hand tightly.
âWhy are you crying?â
âWhy are you suddenly pushing me away? Is it because youâre going to marry Duke Russell and you need to get rid of someone like me? If thatâs it, then why did you⊠why did you allow me?â
Ah, great. Thereâs something I donât know again, isnât there?
What did I allow this time? Iâm going to lose my mind.
âSir Francis, I really donât remember much right now, but what exactly did I âallowâ you to do?â
âYou allowed me to kiss you⊠and now youâre pushing me away. Why?â
Huh? That wasnât a kiss!
Hey! How can you call that a kiss?! A kiss isâwellâthat thing! The adult thing! There has to beâuhânegotiation! Physical negotiation!
âWhen did we ever kiss?â
âYour Highness, really⊠how could you⊠uhâŠâ
Because he was still holding my hand, he couldnât wipe away his tears. I felt bad for him. But honestly⊠he looked even prettier when he cried.
Iâd meant to stay stern, but somehow, the way he cried so delicatelyâit was dangerously charming.
âOh, wait. Are you talking about that peck from before?â
âHuh?â
âThat wasnât a kiss.â
Now that I think about itâ
ăâŒIâm upset with Princess Gracie.ă
âYou brushed my hair back that time, remember?â
So thatâs what this is about?
âYes. I thought⊠if I did that, maybe Your Highness would look at me again.â
Ah, heâs talking about that rainy day. His hair kept getting in his eyes, so I brushed it back for him.
âI look at you all the time anyway. Youâre the one whoâs been cold to me since the day you were with Adrian.â
âI was trying to hold myself back.â
âHold back from what?â
I gently freed my hand and wiped his cheek. Princess Gracie wasnât exactly small, but Francis was hugeâit wasnât easy to reach his face comfortably.
âI donât want to say. But Your Highness, why have you been so cold to me?â
âBecause you wouldnât tell me anything. I had to hear from Adrian what I did to you.â
âAhâŠâ
He blinked, and crystal tears rolled down like glass beads.
Honestly⊠youâre at your prettiest when you cry. What do I do with you?
My heart was pounding like Iâd just sprinted a mile.
So I changed the subject out of nowhere.
âWanna make a bet?â
âA bet, Your Highness?â
âYeah. Whoever wins gets a wish granted.â
If I win, Iâll return your marquis title and let you leave the palace.
And when that happens, Iâll apologize properly.
Apologizing now, with no memories, would just sound insulting to him.
Even if itâs Princess Gracieâs mess, if it needs cleaning upâI can at least do that much.
Better than forcing him to stay.
âThen if I win, please kiss me.â
âWhat?â
âI donât really understand much. So if I win, please kiss me.â
Ah, so this is because I said that earlier thing was just a peck, huh?
Wow, heâs so devoted to my sister that heâs ready to offer up his first kiss? Not that Iâd complain. Heâs handsome and cute.
And when he cries, he looks downright seductive! His chest isnât bad either! But whateverâsince Iâm going to win, it doesnât matter!
âFine. But if I win, you have to grant my wish without complaint.â
âUnderstood.â
So I grabbed one of the documents I was about to discard and handed it to Francis.
âLetâs see who can throw this farther!â
Iâm amazing at paper airplanes, by the way.
Iâve never lost before. I folded it neatly, creased the wings just right, and held it ready to launch.
âWhoever flies it farther wins?â
âYep!â
Francis had stopped crying now and was watching my paper airplane intently.
âIâll go first.â
âAll right.â
He hadnât even tried folding one himselfâit was obvious he didnât know how! Ha! That means victory is mine! Iâll give you freedom! Dobby is free!
With confidence, I threw it as hard as I could.
The breeze caught it just rightâit soared from the second floor all the way to the greenhouse in the distance! Iâd never seen one fly that far before.
âSee? Your turn now, Sir Francis!â
âUnderstood.â
Then he crumpled his paper into a ball and threw it like a baseball pitcher.
âNo way!â
His paper wad flew past the greenhouse and landed in the rose garden beyond it.
âI win.â
The same guy who was crying a moment ago was now smiling.
Hey! Didnât your mom ever tell you not to laugh right after cryingâyouâll grow horns on your butt!
âGracie?â
I looked down and saw a familiar voice calling upâClayton!
For the first time ever, I was actually glad to see him.
âClayton?â
âCan I come up?â
His dark hair shimmered under the sunlight as he smiled and waved.
âSure. But not through the door.â
That was my polite way of saying donât come up here, but he just smiled even wider.
I glanced at Francisâhe was smiling the same way, maybe because he was still riding his victory high.
âI won, so Iâll collect my reward later.â
Damn it.
âHaha⊠sure.â
I sighed, and he slowly approached. His hand brushed my cheekâI looked up to see his tear-stained face gazing down at me.
Donât cry again. Youâre way too enchanting like that.
âIâm here, Gracie.â
âWhatâhow did youâ?â
Before I could finish, his arm wrapped around my waist, making me flinch. I smacked Francisâs hand away, and he blinked, looking past me toward Clayton.
âThis is the second floor.â
âYeah, and how did you get up here?!â
âItâs easy.â
I looked downâthere was a tree whose branches reached near the terrace. WaitâŠ
âYou didnât climb the tree, did you?â
âYup.â
I tried to pry his arms off my waist, but he only hugged me tighter. What, was he trying to crush my organs?! I pried at his fingers one by one, but every time I loosened one, the others tightened.
âYou maniac!â
âSo Francis Patel can touch you, but I canât?â
âCorrect.â
Francis just stood there watching us, looking unsure if he should separate us or stay still.
Hey! Rescue me!
Then again, in this situation, he probably wouldnât. So I had no choice.
âOh, uhâlet me see your face!â
âHuh?â
He immediately let go. Damn, I shouldâve said that from the start.
âReally?â
As soon as I said it, Francisâs face fell again. Great. I shouldnât look at him. You two used to get along fineâwhat is this tension now? Iâd rather deal with Adrian and Joshua together than this mess.
âWhyâd you come up here?â
I turned to Clayton, who was smiling shyly like a blushing bride. No, waitâheâs the groom type, isnât he? Still, whatâs with the lack of awareness? Or is he pretending?
âI wanted to take a walk in the imperial garden with you. And I have some good news youâll like.â
âJust say it here. Iâm too lazy to go.â
Why does he cling harder the more I push him away? Shouldnât his feelings have cooled by now? Or maybe Francisâs fading affection for my sister is affecting him too?
âYou got hurt again, didnât you?â
ââŠYeah.â
I sighed.
âI was too harsh. Iâm kidding. Letâs go to the garden together.â
ââŠâ
âI actually wanted to see you.â
âReally?â
Of course itâs a lie. You and Francis together terrify me. One looks ready to snap my neck, and the other looks ready to break my spine.
Just remembering last time makes my life flash before my eyes.
âYeah.â
Still, I couldnât refuse when he smiled and took my hand, sunlight glinting on his dark hair and those blue eyes full of warmth.
âBut why are you going toward the railingâhey!â
This lunatic!
âYou idiot! Why are you jumping out the window instead of using the door!?â
Claytonâthis absolute madmanâhad said âletâs go to the garden,â then lifted me up and jumped off the terrace!
My heart nearly stopped!
âHuh? Were you scared?â
âYES!â
âYour Highness!â
I wasnât the only oneâFrancis had jumped down after us like it was nothing.
Then Clayton, still holding me, said calmly,
âScold me later. Not now.â
âWhaâwhat?! Hey!â
He started running while carrying me, and Francis was getting farther and farther behind.
âYour Highness!â
Francis reached out desperately as he chased after us.
Damn it, now Iâm getting kidnapped right in front of his face!
ăQuest! Escape from Francis Patel! âŒă
Ugh. Iâm getting motion sick.
ăâŒReward: You will gain a clue for the âMirror of Truth IIâ quest!ă
âRun, Clayton!â
âHuh?â
âRun faster!â
Fine! For the sake of the questâIâll let myself be kidnapped!
âOkay!â
He grinned and ran even faster. For someone smiling like that, just how much stamina do you have, anyway?
